Just a quick post to say nice to meet you all, have lurked in the shadows here for a year or so but this is my first post, Im fairly new to the game and a late starter, im 32, have played with societies and friends for a couple of years but never anything too serious.

Recently joined my first club and now have my GUI, its 21:o, but my goal is to have it below 20 by the end of year.

    So, Hello!!

    Welcome Davey,

Started round the same level myself when I was around 29-30, similar to yourself had just played society golf for a few years before that. You might be late to the game compared to a lot of guys, but you're still young in the game relative to the average age of an amateur golfer I'd say, so a lot of years playing time left!

Best of luck with the game. There's no reason that you shouldn't be able to get the handicap going the right direction with a bit of work & concentration. And don't get too disheartened if you're struggling to play to your handicap for a while at first

Thanks for that, Ive played to my exact handicap twice (in about 6 club comps) the other 4 ive been between a few off, never come close to winning anything but im enjoying it which is the main thing, just happy to be out playing, if it wasnt for having to work and the disapproval of the Mrs Id happily play every day

Thanks, I'll take you up on the offer next time there is an outing in the Kildare/Dublin area (I dont drive which makes anywhere further afield a bit of an ordeal)

Think there is an outing in Dunmurray in June. I'll arrange something closer to the event if you want.
Quite a few have car pooled to outings further afield so don't be shy and you'll generally get sorted.

Good luck with getting into the game.

    Very Good.

I played there last year and really liked the course.

€10 for open singles which was great value.

Yeah I like it aswell, nothing fancy but I like the course and its been a very welcoming & friendly place to play, its handy for me as live about 15 mins from there and i pass it on the way home from work, I joined with my brother in law originally but my own brother and dad have joined up now aswell, so Im never stuck for someone to have a round with in the evenings. Trying to get 3 rounds in a week while the weather is decent!!

Just mad at myself for taking so long to become a member somewhere!!

Better to join later than not join at all.

I am a member of Portarlington Golf Club myself.

Open week starts on the 6th June.

I would recommend playing it if you get a chance.
