New Tyres for A6

    Hi All,

Need to invest in a couple of new front tyres for my 2.0 TDI A6 (225/55/R17). I drive it pretty hard on the motorway and stopping is important to me as is wear and fuel efficiency.

Don’t mind spending a few quid on them and have got quotes for

    • Michelin Primacy 3
    • Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance
    • Uniroyal Rain Sport 3
    • Dunlop SP Sport Maxx RT
    • Bridgestone Potenza RE002 (Current Tyre)

Quotes for a pair fitted from €310-€360 (Uniroyal 310, Dunlop 360).

From my brief fly around the internet it appears to be between the Goodyears and the Uniroyals with the Uniroyals winning out on Wet Grip and the Goodyears on Wear and Fuel Efficiency.

Leaning towards the Goodyears which would set me back an extra €40.

Anybody got any views on these or have I missed something completely?

    Thanks

    C22

    I ordered 2 Continental ContiSportContact 5 225/40R18 92 Y XL FR MO @ 128 euro each off of OPONEO.ie (free delivery).

I got them delivered to a tyre place near work and got them fitted and balanced for 15 euros.

Next time I might go with Goodyear F1s.

i have goodyear eagle f1s on mine for last 2 months. No issues, good stopping, good in the wet, they still look as new on the car. Much better then previous bridgestones esp in wet. Got mine from oponeo and fitted locally for 50quid for the 4

The F1s don’t seem to come in 225/55 (at least not on openeo).

The Goodyear Efficient Grip Peformance are €146 each – that’s €30 cheaper each than I am being quoted. Assuming it will cost €15-20 per tyre for fitting is it really worth the hastle to save €20/30 on a pair?

sorry mine are 245/45's...and just checked on goodyear site, not available at all for 225/55/17's

I have uniroyal Rainsport2 on mine (245/40/18) and find them great. I would drive it hard enough as well.

Wear not an issue with them?

From the reviews I’ve seen the Uniroyals seem to be the best tyre for grip but the softness that gives them the grip also means they wear quicker?

Also a “C” fuel rating v “B” for the Goodyears – not sure how this is calculated (and with my driving would probably be an “F” any way!!) but would suggest the extra few quid on the GYs might be a better investment?

Those Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance are a superb tyre. That would be my choice from the list.

    Thanks for the advice George

I would pick one of those.

    • Michelin Primacy 3
    • Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance
    • Uniroyal Rain Sport 3

I bought a pair of dunlop sportmaxx rt (245/45/17 -160 Euro each) on lexus is250 after the praise they had in tests.

After 5000 km they are 50% worn and I don't drive harsh. Just city driving. Not recommended.

Edit: I also put eagle f1s into front at the same time and they are brilliant tyres.

I havent found the wear to be too bad. I have about 15k kms on them at the moment and they are about 50%. Had a set of dunlops on my A4 before this and only got about 18k out of them

I see a lot of complain about wear rate here for this particular model(sportmaxx RT) :

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Dunlop/SportMaxx-RT.htm

But some users are fine with the wear. They may be using different compund for different size or weight of the car affects wear. I don't know to be honest.

Other than the wear issue, they are quite silent, comfortable, grippy tyres I have to accept. But too dear to wear at that rate.
