    Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a quandary and I would really appreciate some advice. I did my Leaving Certificate in 2012, at the time I applied to CAO as my career guidance teacher advised me to but I didn't know what to put down so I left it blank. I had already agreed with my parents that I would do a PLC course in my hometown because I was really unsure of what I wanted to do and I didn't want to waste money dropping out. I got part time work that year and did my PLC which was in media studies.

Long story short, I didn't enjoy the course. Well I did enjoy aspects of it: such as the writing/ creative part but not the practical/IT element. Although I was grateful for it because at one point I was going to do a four year level 8 in that area.

May 2013 and I did not know what to put down on my CAO so I let it slide. Rather than do another PLC I chose to apply for some voluntary work experience. I worked in a solicitor's office (I did some legal secretarial work there and got some admin experience), I worked with a vet, I worked with the local paper. But I still do not know what to do!

I'm 20 now and all my friends will be going into their third year of college in September, yet here I am still wondering what I'm going to do. I feel like I'm being left behind solely because I can't get my act together and choose something. I can't settle on anything.

I have completed the Myers-Briggs personality test, I have possibly done every single career test out there. One thing that comes out on top is that I'm creative but that doesn't really tell me anything. I was good at English and Art in school, but also Biology and Maths so I just dunno. Can someone please help? I have only a month and half until the CAO deadline and I really cannot stick another year at home.

    Thanks.

P.S.: I know no one really knows what they want to do, but I just want to get something for the time being (that I'm reasonably good at and enjoy) and stick to it. If I change careers ten years down the line, I don't mind. I just need something to work on atm.

Could you do a broad degree like arts where you can explore different subjects and not have to commit to one career path?

+1 to this. Arts is perfect for someone in your position. Your creative so you'll have plenty of subjects to choose from in first year which you can narrow down in second year when you become more familiar with the subjects. After the 3 years you can then do a masters or post grad in something more specific. If you really want to study something but are at a loss as to what then I would recommend arts. You can pick subjects like English and creative writing or legal studies which would compliment your working experience. I hadn't a clue what I wanted to do either, but I picked arts and I'm getting closer to knowing what I like, and I certainly know what I don't like. Best of luck.
