MIMS prices V Pharmacy Prices

Are the prices listed in MIMS the RRP for the pharmacy? I’ve seen huge variations: one med I see is listed at €22.50 for 30 caps (branded) but pharmacies I’ve experienced charge circa €45 (branded) for 30 caps.

From memory and not having one near me, its the GMS reimbursement price; if applicable (some products not being GMS reimbursable - I assume its a wholesale price for those).

Depending on an individual pharmacies fee structure there could be a markup of up to 50% plus a dispensing fee of whatever - €3 to €7 would be a fairly normal range. If they're not oral medicines, e.g. its a suppository there'll then be 23% VAT.

From the MIMS website (here and here):
    Prices
The Price to Wholesalers (PTW) is given fro the following products: GMS-reimbursed products, products on the High-Tech scheme and Hospital-only products. The trade price is given for all other products. Neither price includes pharmacist dispensing fees. Prices are quoted to enable the prescriber to compare the cost of proprietary preparations and do not have any relation to the retail cost of the drug, nor of its cost if obtained on a private prescription.

    or
    Pricing
Following changes introduced by the HSE for the reimbursement of medicines under the various HSE community schemes, and as MIMS Ireland relies on manufacturers for the prices published with entries, the pricing policy of MIMS Ireland has changed. From June 2010 our pricing policy is as follows:
    • The Price To Wholesalers (PTW) is given for GMS-reimbursed products, products on the High-Tech scheme and hospital-only products.

    • The trade price is given for all other products.

The most important part is; "Prices are quoted to enable the prescriber to compare the cost of proprietary preparations and do not have any relation to the retail cost of the drug, nor of its cost if obtained on a private prescription."
