Can gums grow back

    Hi

My gum has receeded due to aggressively brushing as opposed gum disease. I used to smoke but now use a ecig! Not sure if the nicotein is still bad for gums.

    It's my front top tooth.

Can I stimulate the gum to grow? The net says I can but other sources say no.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks

Your gums are a carpet over the bone that holds your teeth in. Its generally a even thickness of about 3-4mm.

Recession is caused when the bone receeds along with the gum. It can happen in the absence of periodontal disease as you suggest from agressive oral hygiene/abrasive tooth brushing, tooth position, orthodontic repositioning and triangular anatomy or genetic predisposition.

The gum generally will not grown back and there is nothing underneath. There are however some proceedures that can geneererate the gum or reposition the gum at a more pleasing level. These are specialised proceedures an beyond my expertise to advise on. Only some type of recession can be repaired predictably.

Your dentist migh refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist) to check your options.

No, you can get a gum graft though. You'd need to speak to a periodontist about that m.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I have spoken to a periodontist who has suggested an alloderm gum graft.

Looks pretty sore looking at youtube videos. Anyone have any experience or get it done before?

its the nicer of the grafts to get as you're not taking any tissue from the roof of your mouth.

Yes the area will be sore, but at least it is limited to one site and not two.

Are you off the e-cig now? i would suggest maybe laying off it for a week or so after the graft, but again go on what your periodontist says.

Best of luck with it :)

So this ha progressed a little and am due to get alloderm in 2015. I have been keeping an eye on Pin Hole Surgical Technique that is now available in Ireland by one dentist. A few dentists on here so what do you think of the Pin Hole option?
