Buy used car from garage or person

Would you say for us non-car experts we would be best advised to buy from a garage and avail of the warranty?

Maybe there are some better deals available on donedeal or buyandsell but then again we would run the risk of being sold a pup (being non-car experts) and would then have little or no means of resolving the issue.

Apart from the standard advice which would be to bring a person who is an expert to the test drive (this is ideal but not always possible) what else can be done to ensure that buying a used car from someone we don't know carries the lowest possible risk (any papers that the seller must sign or agreements/verifiable documentation etc.) - thank you

    Its always a hard call.

If you buy privately you will probably get a lower price, but as you say no comeback should something go wrong.

Then again, you might only get a 3 months or 6 month warranty from a dealer, and your car could pack up the day after your warranty expires, then you are on your own again.

If buying privately, always would the extra hundred or two to do a full car history/finance check plus pay a mechanic to give it a full checking over.
