Anyone know of any pro detailers available next week to decontaminate & correct the paintwork on my car?

It's a mk5 golf and needs one or possibly two days work.

Think Elite Auto Clean have a good reputation. May have moved premises recently from Ballycoolin into town but not sure.

    Hi roger,

would you not give it a go yourself or possibly you haven't the time.

You get a good feeling after seeing all the work you put in and the results.

Do Detailing Shed do detailing or do they just sell products?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,885 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Detailing Shed are only selling products at the moment. The service they provide is on hold for the foreseeable future.

Cheers. I have it narrowed to Spirit in Leixlip, Elite or Kingpin.

It'll probably depend on which, if any, has a free slot next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,885 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

I haven't ever heard feedback from Kingpin but out of those choices, Spirit would be my first followed by Elite.

    Brian in Spiritdetailing.
    He's your man.

I don't mean to drag this off topic, and I know before I even post this I'm gonna end up annoying a lot of people here, but here goes anyway...

I'm gonna assume you've never really detailed a car before (going on you saying you haven't the equipment)?

If you ring them up, please, please, please, don't tell them it needs 'one or possibly two days work'. It's a horrendously insulting thing to do.

As a photographer I've had people telling me "I just need a few photos, there's only an hours work in it" and I would never work for someone who, with no knowledge of my business, tries to tell me how long it will take me.

I'm sure a Detailer would be just as irked by such a statement and you may put them off dealing with you.

(as an aside, in my whole life, I've never had a photo job that was 'only an hours work').

Most detailer's I have talked to online or the one or two i've bumped into in real life, are all fairly sound people, and I'm genuinely just trying to nudge you in the right direction. A detailer will tell you, upon looking at your car, how long it'll take them (and I'm sure the majority of detailers have an average turnaround time that they can refer to anyway) but just be wary of that.

I know photography and detailing are very different businesses, but i know a lot of photographers who won't price jobs or suddenly become booked out when 'that' kind of customer appears.

No offence to yourself, OP. I know you probably didn't mean it like that when you wrote it, but do keep in mind detailing is a specialist area. I've been researching it for months and trying it out a lot, and even I still have only barely gotten the basics down, so, like anything else, a good detailer will be worth their money. :)

Spoke with Brian and booked for two days next month. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed...

    How much per day?

    How much per day?

I am not 100% certain but I think Brian has it at 250 for one day or 200 per day for multiple days.

    ^^^100% correct.

I'm more than a little nervous about telling the missus that I've dropped €400 on a "car wash"...

Just compare it to getting her hair done....you could do it for free for her or she could pay someone who knows that they're doing!

Are Auto Elite that busy that you'd need to book in advance? Mine just needs a wash for Saturday week, but apartment living etc etc.

Would you not be better off ringing them and asking them that question?! :P

Ouch. €25 an hour. Suppose that's understandable as I'm sure he has significant expenses.

I just gave them a ring and they said that you'd have to book it in no matter what.

What's your mechanics hourly rate? What's your doctors hourly rate?
Take out the cost of products, rent, etc; check out detailer prices in the UK if you want a shock!!
Bargain prices here by comparison! ;)

Just to add to this, this is only because Irish people don't care about taking care of their car like people in the UK do. The UK detailers' prices are only "shocking" because Irish people don't understand what's involved. I've had more "ah jaysus that's wicked expensive, I'll just go to the lad in the car park" tripe from I would safely say, 20 people in the last 6 months alone.

It's not just bargain prices here, it's below-cost prices most of the time!

By the time he pays various taxes, rent on a unit, local authority rates, detailer's insurance, public liability insurance, light, heat, water charges, a nominal amount towards the cost of the equipment and materials being used, you would be shocked at how little of that €25/hour is left.

Stop and think about it a second - if you were to get €200 gross per day and just take the income tax and PRSI out of it, you would just be getting around the average industrial wage. Now take all the above out of it as well, and you can see what I'm getting at.

BTW, all this is assuming you will have cars coming at you to keep you busy at least five days a week, all year round, when actually the reality of Detailing can be quite different.

Roger Mellie, you are getting a bargain, believe me.

And to hammer home the point Roger, show her a picture of what happened the last time you tried your hand at a spot of Ladies Hairdressing:
