Meh. If I boycotted every company that had a buffoon on its board I'd be dead inside a week.

No problem OP - consider them boycotted.

(as a non-driving emigrant, this hardly feels like much of a gesture though...)

I would have assumed that Cowens placement on the Board of Topaz was a comfy payment for giving away our gas in the Corrib fields to different energy companies, the main one being Dutch Shell (who are now operating as Topaz in Ireland).
Funny how there's absolutely no mention of that in the article seeing as how he was Taoiseach at the time.

The car I drive runs a lot better on Topaz petrol than it does on others though.

I don't even know where to begin telling you what's wrong with all of that statement.

    Seriously, have you no google?

Shell do not own Topaz. Denis O'Brien does.

Brian Cowen was Taoiseach between May 2008 to March 2011. The Corrib field was discovered in 1996, the first exploration licence being granted in 1993. Shell acquired the project (most of it) from Enterprise Oil in 2002.

Remuneration for a non-exec board seat on a firm like Topaz would be quite small. Even if it was a "comfy payment" it woud be a drop in the ocean given Cowen's already comfortable lifestyle.

I boycott 'em anyway, due to their prices always being higher than other petrol stations in my area.

    Christ on a bike...

I'm not sure what's worse, the paranoia or the complete lack of facts.

Big misinformation that Topaz=Shell...They don't. Some protests organised around the fact that boycotting topaz is the same as boycotting shell is quite untrue.
Shell don't own Topaz nor do Topaz own shell. Shell sold off anything they had in Ireland except Corrib years ago. (Statoil did the same BTW)

If you are interested Shell and Statoil left this country years ago (with the exception of Corrib). One has nothing to to with the other. Topaz don't receive anything from the Corrib pipeline nor have any interest in it.

Denis O Brien is far too close to politicians for him not to be an influence.

I had a fuel card with Topaz [2 cents off per litre, no transaction fee], missed a direct debit payment due to an unforeseen bill incoming that took the money from my disposable money account of which I transferred money in immediately later that day and paid over the phone... and they've refused continuity of my account, because I'm a credit liability apparently even though I paid for it already that day, unless I put a €500 credit deposit onto my Topaz fuel card...

    **** that.

seems this protest against Topaz is growing with several groups emptying the forecourts to protest Denis OBrien saddling them with his water meters
