It depends on what set up you have.
Saorview/freeview there are lots of recorders out there. Example a Panasonic PVR
FTA and Saorviiew there are Combo boxes that you can buy in store or online-and if you plug in a USB or hard drive you can record. Ferguson, Walker, Triax amongst other manufacture boxes. TV Trade.ie is a good website which I have bought from.
Freesat boxes like the humax which have a built in hard drive. No Republic of Ireland channels with this box.

thanks for the reply i emailed tvtrade.ie but got no reply, yeah i'm aware that there is combo boxes that can record on to a internal hard drive or a external hard drive but as far a know you can only record the channel that is on the tele, my mother would like to record a programme and watch another programme at the same time.is this posible?

Have a look at this box and what it can do. It has come a long way in the last 2 years.

thanks fresh pots for a fast reply, a few questions, how much does it cost and is there any installers in dublin putting them in ?, whats the feed back from users, my mother currently has UPC so is used to that system to record, so user friendly is this system to record?

Would she consider upgrading to a tv with integrated Saorview ? The box can do the recording while she watches live through the set's own system or with the use of a usb stick she could record two different shows simultaneously.

would that not mean that she would limited to watching irish channels when she wants to record a uk channel, i might be a cheaper way to change systems but i can see problems with way of doing a recording.

To do this she'd also probably need to invest in a dish with twin lnb's aswell . This is needed even if she had the "magic box "
