    Hi All,

I came across this Ad in Done Deal and it seems to be a very nice looking vintage car with low mileage. I was thinking about contacting the seller but I am wondering whether anyone here is familar with this car or can suggest any particular questions about this model that I should ask.

    Thanks,
    Sam

Given a 1978 911SC doesn't look like that I'm guessing this car has had a newer Carrera body stuck on the old chassis. The obviously question would be who did this, when, and what else did they do.

I'd also be suspicious that they call it blue when it's clearly purple!

Mmm. Beautiful-looking bitta kit, though.

Given the forum we're in, I'd hazard a guess most people here (myself included) would have preferred to see it in its original glory. :)

    Dades,

Thank you for your helpful reply, as jimgoose also noted the colour is quite catchy and I don't know enough about these cars to spot the difference as you did.

Personally I'd be worried about a car with a new body on it as I hear rust can be a big problem, maybe that was a factor.

If it were in good mechanical shape I am guessing that a mismatched body might be a problem down the road- so to speak.

    Thanks,
    Sam

It's not the entire body, just the bolt-on bits, no?

Getting a third party mechanic to give it a full check would be well advised if you were still interested - especially given its never seen the inside of an NCT centre.

Without seeing it I'd assume so given that the 911 is monocoque, changing the body would be difficult to say the least.

Is it just me or are the rear left lights at a funny angle in relation to the rest of the bodywork? The panel gaps don't look even.

I'm no expert on 911's but I imagine that quite an amount of surgery was done to get most of the later body panels (and electric spoiler) on the old body, or was one small panel changed I wonder?

This car has been for sale numerous times in the last 3 years. As mentioned some of the gaps look a bit funny even from the photos we can see. It's not a huge job to modernise, or backdate a 911, provided its done correctly and to a high standard I see nothing wrong with it. I would second the advice to get a mechanic who is familiar with 911's to look it over. On the off chance you intend using it as a daily these cars need to be fully warmed up, and there is a hell of a lot of engine oil, so short trips will kill the motor in no time !

Thanks MercMad and Ian for your comments. I've decided to give this one a miss as your points are well taken and others have mentioned that this particular car has been up for sale quite a few times in recent years. I'm a bit nervous of getting into repairs as well as future concerns of selling on should the time comes to change.

    Regards, Sam

I contacted the owner a couple of weeks ago, there is no service history with the car as it was "lost by the previous owner" and he has no real knowledge of the condition of the gearbox, timing chain tensioners or the engine. He bought it about 10 months ago.
