    hi folks

Im a 35 year old guy, driving cars since I was 17 or 18. I've a full Irish license since around then also. Ive never done a theory test. My license is for cars, bikes under 50cc and work vehicles also.

My question is, if I want to buy a motorbike in the morning, whats involved with gettign that on the road. I presume if I buy a bike thats 250cc for example, I need to get it restricted,is that easily done or is it expensive? If I restirct a bike back to 250 cc, what kind of speed does that limit me to? I drive on a dual carraigeway in and out to work, I dont want to be one of those moving roadblocks crawling along the hard sholder. On a 50cc can you do 100k per hour?

also will i have to do a load of lessons, or do i somehow escape all of that cause I'm an old fella with a license predating all that theory test stuff.?

    thanks

What does it say on the back of your car license? Any mention of bikes?

The license is for B (cars), M (motorbikes less than or equal to 50cc or 45kmph) and W (work vehicles, tractors etc)

You need to do the Category A theory test.

then you need to do IBT (initial basic training) with an approved motorcycle instructor. do all 5 modules to get a full unrestricted learner permit.

then you are legal to drive on the road on your learner permit.

then after 6 months you are eligible to pass your full test.

as you are over the age of 24, there is no need for restriction. In fact to get a full unrestricted licence you need to pass the test on a bike of a minimum CC and power (about 600cc, can't remember exactly) . If you pass the test on a small bike you will receive a restricted (category A2) licence.

just had a look at the prices for IBT there, seems ludicriously expensive. I was expecting to have to do a couple of lessons at a cost of 20/30quid an hour or something like that....I'm way out of touch obviously..!

Anyone know the best(cheapest) place in limerick to do IBT?

    thanks

Try the motorbike forums for an instructor in limerick. I just did mine in Feb, id try and find the best guy rather than the cheapest, it is expensive but you can get a lot from it if you havent been on bikes before.

How much was it if you don't mind me asking?

I have a dr 200 and I have a provisional licence for years in fact I don't give a **** about their money generating scheems I rang the bike licence authority yesterday and they and asked them about doing the mandority 2 yearly test and I was told that from a 125 to a 390 motorcycle is not adequate for a bike test anymore so I asked what do I have to do to retain my A2 licence and this is the answer go hire a bike for the day or buy a bike for the test .... ok what about all the people with 125s to 390s bikes on the road will they have to sell em or let them in garages at home there certainly no use to anyone owening one if you haven't got an A2 licence or current learner permit .......only in Ireland if it was france .....I wonder

Mo Garvey of CC Rider Training operates in Clare and Limerick and by all accounts she's pretty good. She charges €480 these days for 16-hour IBT on category "A".
