I've had an insinkerator in situ for some 5 years now and with the exception of an odd clogged u bend as a result of carrot peels, it's been trouble free. Something that has burdened me however is the consequences of the bigger picture. Any know issues for external waste pipes to become so ridden with crud and debris that they just back up? Any known horror stories? Is there maintenance I should be doing to reduce the risk of a blockage?

They're banned by most / all county councils now because they allegedly lead to too much organic waste in the drains which uses up the good bugs in the processing plants that's supposed to be eating our crap, or something like that.

Anyways, for a 'proper' drain flush I put 10 litres of warm water in a plastic watering can and slowly add 500mL granular caustic soda stirring all the time. Pour this down the sink over a 5-minute period and your pipes will be as clean as, er, a Vatican Bugler's trumpet :pac:

I very very rarely use costic. In fact I think only twice. Can do more damage than help. Can make pipe brittle nd eat seals.

fill the sink with boiling water. Good squirt of fairy liquid. Leave it go in one blast. Rare that doesnt solve kitchen sink blocks for me.
