Hi all, just looking at a 2010 avensis luna with 150k miles for €10k from dealer in Dublin... Has anyone any advice on the mileage aspect? Is it risky? The car will be used for a 60mile round trip daily commute....
    Cheers.

    Cheers.

My advice to you - is to see what else can be purchased at 10 k - or see what 2010 Avensis diesels with say 70 to 100,000 miles can be bought for.

High mileage doesn't overly bother me if the car is in decent order - but you want to be seeing what work has been done on that Avensis.

If the cars had a lot of work done during its life(as in repairs) then it may possibly be okay.

But price needs to reflect the mileage - and 10 k isn't doing it for me im afraid*.

In terms of it been risky - well that's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question.

I personally think modern diesels are a risky purchase at anytime truth be told.

Your 60 miles a day equates to 300 miles a week on a 5 day week - assume another 100 miles per weekend and that's 400 miles a week.

That's 20,800 miles a year - so many would say diesel territory.

Personally I take the view however - that id rather pay extra to fill the tank rather then paying for the repairs on a modern diesel.

Yes you can be lucky - but you do run the risk of hitting high repair bills.

Personally I don't think the fact this Avensis has 150,000 miles - increases the risk factor significantly - its just the risk is there no matter whatever mileage is on a modern diesel.

*others may think its fine value

Is it actually a luna or is it a uk import?
Is there good service history on it?

First nct due on that in September, they can do it 6 months early if they want.

I would have my reservations about the seller.

With 10k in my pocket i would steer clear of anything over 90thou miles. The reason being that if you only keep the car two years it will be at 170k then what will it be worth.I would have a look in the uk ,you will get better value there op.

That car is (despite the badging) an Aura, which is second from bottom of the range. Lunas weren't available in 2.0 diesel until the facelifted model came out in 2012.

If you must have an Avensis (and God only knows why you would want one - it's comprehensively outclassed by a Mondeo or Passat), at least get a Strata model.

Ex taxi ?? Browsing through Car mags in Easons the other day taxi driver complaining about metal fatigue in the doors of his Avensis similiar mileage and of course not covered under warranty

    That's common on that Avensis.

    That's common on that Avensis.

Indeed, Toyota covered it for us when it happened (new doors, proper respray etc), and the car was about 30,000 km out of warranty when that happened. Mechanically it hasn't missed a beat, though but overall the build quality is so bad compared to the previous generation car (03-08) and that is some way off the older Toyotas for build quality.

In reality modern Toyotas are nothing to write home about on the quality and reliability front, yet people will still keep buying them because of what they were like 20 years ago....

    .

the 03-08 was pretty damn robust alright. I'm just about to put my 03 up for sale, it's one of the earliest of that models, but it has 150k miles on the clock, has never had a thing done to it other than normal service, and never skipped a beat. would likely keep driving it other than i got a good deal on an ex company car where i work

hadn't heard anything about structural problems with the new avensis, father has one so i must tell him to have a look

The issue with buying a high miler is resale.
On a diesel, if I was buying a car to keep I would have no problems with a high miler. Indeed it is better, as you know the car was less likely used for short trips with all the new electrical crap in the daysuls these days.
