I've been asked to recommend a car for someone with a €10k budget.

    It'll be their first car.

Looking for something 2010+ and not something tiny.

    Thoughts?

Have they got insurance quotes on anything yet? The reason I ask is that being a first time driver their choice may well be limited to what they can afford to insure.

Ford focus, Opel Astra or a golf

They'll be 25+ so insurance shouldn't be the worst thing.

This is the first thing that popped up when I looked on Carzone, thought it was interesting:

Has your friend any opinion on what they'd like?

    Hi,

Might get this for 10k as it has been for sale for awhile.

Advice would be do not spend 10k on a first car , start with something small engined and under 2k , allow a year to learn the roads correctly and have the eventually knock or scrape then when they feel they are ready spend more money on a better car.

I know so many people who spent a fortune on their first car only to ruin through lack of experience, I don't mean they are going to total it but the majority of new drivers will have a knock or a scrape fairly quickly, won't bother you as much on 1k car it will on 10k.

    That's my 2 cents anyway.

    +1
Buy a <1k fiesta/polo/yaris, then when you have been driving for a bit and are more confident then buy the expensive nicer car.

Nuts to spend 10k on a first car, in my humble opinion. Why not a nice Golf, 3k will get them in an 03, and the choice is huge. Also if you get am immaculate one, its hard to tell the difference in an 02 and an 08, etc,. Be nice to get a years commuting under your belt, perhaps a scrape or two in a carpark or similar, and still have 7k in the piggybank.
If they are going to spend 10k, despite all of us here trying to drag this thread off topic :) then how about a Passat diesel with the 130 or 140 HP engine? Pretty good reliable car, good solid feeling about them, large crumple zone, and so on.

    Agree completely with the above.

Spent 5k on my 1st car and it had its share of scrapes etc when a 2k car wouldhave done the job. I did keep it for six years however.

Also the fact your friend doesn't seem pushed on a particular car helps.
