A heads up... Or more of a moan.

Had passenger window of my Passat smashed and stereo taken while in Dundalk overnight.

Three other cars reported by 10am this morning and Gaurds expected more. All were the same, targeted that stereo in particular.

I didn't realise factory stereos were a target of theft.

These stereos fetch good money as they are a very popular after market upgrade, have a look on the likes of ebay.

Thats crap, sorry to hear that. They go on eBay for a pretty penny, also they're very easy to remove. No special tools required just a torx and your away, and they are applicable across the VW range (upgrading to RCD510 is a plug and play installation), so no shortage of buyers.

The RNS310, RNS315, RCD510 and RNS510 do look similar enough to each other, number of buttons various, but at a glance similar.

Will have to see about insurance. If I can claim for the window without killing my NCB I will just do that and buy either a new 510 or maybe just a 310 if it is less likely to lead to another smashed window.

The RCD310 usually goes for 100ish second hand, I still have my own one after upgrading to RNS315, they're a little harder to sell since they're standard issue.

If you are interested in selling can you pop me a PM?

I thought the days of stereo theft were long gone, this is a worrying development.

Another great feature of VW's being the more recent car of choice for a certain demographic of society. :(

Insuring a Golf is going to turn into like insuring a Civic in the 90's.

I have the RNS 510 in my car I think it cost 600 quid on ebay but they are mad dear as a factory optional extra.

you need the vin number of the car it was factory fitted to. is the vin number on display near the windscreen?

Loads of sellers on ebay providing codes without a VIN now.

As did I, although this sounds like a little more than an old school smash and grab. Id say your standard Sony Xplod from Halfords is worth next to nothing second hand these days.

Anyway. I have ordered a 310 on ebay now to replace it. Must be the least desirable stereo of the range so I should avoid another smashed window.
