Replacing wallpaper with smooth plaster walls

I have wallpaper throughout the house, most of it painted over several times I think. I would love to get smooth plaster walls instead, so much easier to paint and nicer to look at. I think the walls underneath are dry-lined. Any idea approx how much I might expect to pay per room for the skimming/plastering? I would hope we could do the wallpaper removal and painting ourselves. And how long would I need to leave plaster dry before painting also? Thanks.

I recently got this done in most of a 4 bed bungalow (most of the house was wallpapered right onto the plasterboard, never skimmed). ended up costing me the guts of 10 grand, but that also included ceilings (stippled ceilings are a nightmare).

I was quoted as little as 4 to do it as well, but some lads quote suspiciously cheaply.
