Looking to just head off for a few weeks around Ireland. Don't want to cycle the whole thing but would love my bike with me to see all the areas on it.

Anyone ever tried to do this before? Is there a special pass or extra cost I can pay to do it?

Info is on the Irish Rail website here: http://www.irishrail.ie/travel-information/bicycle-information#bicyclesonintercitytrains

I've brought a bike on off peak commuter services before (which is free), though never on intercity services so will defer to others' experience of this. Basically any of the actual intercity trains (as opposed to commuter trains operating intercity distances) either have some racks for bikes, or in the case of some (not all, despite the suggestions of the linked article - it depends on whether it's a loco-hauled train or an ICR set) Cork-Dublin services there may be a guard's van which will take more. Seemingly you can reserve the space, but again have never tried this.

Yup, €4 each way, €6 for a return, I think.
There is a rack at the end of some of the carriages where you can secure your bike.

Not sure how much use this info will be to you but I regularly travel on the Enterprise (Newry to Dundalk and back) with my bike. They don't charge me; never have. But then I've been using the route for over 20 years and the staff at both stations know me.

6e each way. You need to tick a box to indicate you are bringing a bike and then select a bike seat in carriage d or e.

Some good 9.99 + 2e booking fees out of Dublin at the moment. 18e all in with bike. Same fares return.

Heading to Sligo week after next for 4d coastal ride to Galway, about 550kms. Not sure whether to cycle back from Galway to Dublin or train it. Probably depending on weather forecast.

Edit. Exception to rule is enterprise which I believe is free but haven't used it myself
