GMT Master II Case sizes?

Hi guys, a friend of mine is selling his GMT master and I was thinking of buying it, as I've always wanted one. I thought it should have been bigger though?, I remember a friend of my Dad's had one and it seemed larger ( or maybe I was smaller! ). Here it is beside my Speedmaster Automatic date which is 40mm. Isi t only the newer ceramic bezel that comes in 42mm? Or were there several different case sizes? I'm perfectly happy with it, but am curious to see if there was a larger version available. It's a 16710. Cheers folks.
Boards won't let me post the photo? I don't seem to have enough posts.

    Hi,

You should be able to attach the photo, or alternatively link to the image from a Dropbox public folder, flickr, photobucket etc

I can't, it says I am a new user, which I am not, but I do have a low post count? I will try again.

No, this is the message that I get "You cannot post with images, URLs or attachments because you are a new user. "....seems like a strange restriction, but I don't make the rules!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

That rule is in place because some new accounts were posting some very nasty **** a short while ago.

Anyway, I think that it was the Explorer II that came in 42mm, and other than the DSSD, all Rolex subs are still 40mm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Moffett

Cheers Eoin, the face is smaller than the Omega, but the bezel is thicker. It's plenty big, I just don't want to end up with a strange non standard size. I was going to trade in the Omega for a Speedmaster Pro at some point but if the I get the Rolex any of my other watches will be made redundant! It would seem that 40mm is the standard size for a GMT Master II pre ceramic bezel.

I would like to add that my account is from February 2009?!

You need 50 posts too, I think.

The ceramic GMT is also 40mm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Moffett

We'll get there eventually. I have only boards for company tonight so I'm building up a few as we speak. That is indeed the watch, but it wasn't available last year with the Pepsi bezel, only blue/black...or solid black, and I think this was a larger case. I see the fashion reverting to 39mm of the 70's but I will always want a larger case where possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I really don't think there are/were many Rolex models available with a case larger than 40mm. All I can think of is the Deep Sea Dweller, Yachmaster II, Skydweller and the Explorer II.

Or am I misunderstanding the question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Moffett

You may be correct Eoin, it's the answer to my original question. The watch just looked a tad small beside the speedmaster automatic ( not the reduced mind you, it's a 39-40mm case speedy ). I've done little else all day but google this, and information is kind of thin on the ground. I guess case size shouldn't be primary concern. I'm going to buy the watch anyway. Just trying to reassure myself. I will post pictures for you all, after I reach the magic 50!

Look forward to seeing it! Maybe it's the thick bezel that makes it look a little smaller; I've found the same with some of mine.

Yeah, the face is small I suppose. They say you shouldn't wear a watch that you can't afford to loose, but I meet people everyday driving cars that cost more than they earn annually. My original idea was to go for an older one until this came up, but I plan to wear it every day regardless of condition. I have loved the Omega but it was never a Speedmaster Professional, and the Pro would never be a Rolex. Wish me luck.

    best of luck!

You dod indeed Rob, and both of the watches I suppose!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Moffett

Well, I have gone ahead and bought the watch, and I'm most happy with it. It's not overly loud etc. and the majority of people don't even notice it. It's much lighter than the Omega but it's also easy to feel the quality of the case etc. I have all the documentation including the original bill of sale. The bezel has faded, which I don't mind, but I see there are no shortage of bezel inserts for 16710s on ebay. I would of course, retaint he original for future use if I go to the trouble of swapping it at all. I need to get 8 more posts and I'll put up a picture.

I thought a bout selling the Omega but I've decided to keep it. I would eventually trade it in against a Professional, but I have enough money in watches right now. Owning a Rolex is a lifelong dream realised. I would happily sit here looking at it for the next few hours, but it's past my bedtime! I synchronised the 24hr hand and gave it a good wind. The seller reckoned it was running a tad slow but he had never wound it or set the GMT hand, it hasn't noticeably lost any time in the last few weeks. What do you all think about the bezel, replace or not?

Hmmm... *must get all moderatory*... Then I think, nah, feck that... It's in a damn good cause. Waits for pics :D

Really glad you got your "grail watch" M. You do know it's just the first grail? :)

Looks very cool M. Well may you wear.

There is still the thought of the 60's GMT Master, and I have always wanted an Explorer 1...........

M? You're boned... I think I speak for the rest of us when we all look forward to seeing pics of your growing collection. :D That is a fantastic looking watch and I'm not even a Rolex fan, generally speaking, but there are some of their models... and that is the muttz nutz and no mistake.

Do NOT change that bezel insert. You have no idea how much time and effort people have collectively put into trying to achieve that effect - normally unsuccessfully.

I completely agree with CB. To us that's what makes the watch extra special.

Lovely watch - and I have to agree with the others, don't change the insert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Moffett

Sounds like I had best leave the bezel insert as is! It would never had been a permanent swap anyhow, but I'm inclined to agree. Leave well enough alone.

I have a Sub from 1981 and the bezel has turned to a gorgeous blue-grey colour... please leave your gorgeous bezel where it is! :)

Thanking you! I don't like the modern Subs (too shiny) and this is nicely "under the radar". If ever you feel like offloading that GMT Master II... let me know!
