Hi I've a LinkedIn page set up a good while but I cant seem to increase my connections greatly, only occasionally I come across people that I know of that has a Linkedin profile.

I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions or tips to greatly increase my connections on it.

    Thanks in advance

What kind of connections are you seeking? What's your goal? Do you have a strategy to help you achieve your goal?
Are you just sending connection requests to randomers? Is your profile carefully written, does it have a professional picture, and do you have recommendations? Are you working right now?

These are all questions to consider when trying to leverage LinkedIn.

More in the area of accounting & finance, you can't just send requests to random people, yes its carefully written, profile picture extremely professional etc

the problem I seem to have is that no one I seem to know that should be on the site, is on the site, while they should be for the area of work that they are in.

Is your goal to get a better job? If so, I would send connection requests to recruiters who specialize in finance / accounting, along with a mail outlining your career goals. I would also work on ensuring that your title on LinkedIn is searchable (so rather than, for example, "Finance and Accounting Professional", have for instance "Senior Accountant" as that is what recruiters would search for).

Every opportunity I've ever had from LinkedIn has come from a recruiter I don't know. Connecting with colleagues and former colleagues hasn't yielded any direct benefits for me, except through recommendations received or given.

Ah ok, I never knew that was the case. That actually might be worth doing. Thanks for the hint.

You could also join groups related to your profession and participate in those, and build up more contacts in that way.

I mostly connect with Engineers and recruiters in various industries. Have plenty of connections.
Just send requests. Easier to do on your mobile.
