Just after castrating my first calf with a bander, he was born yesterday so when i went down to tag him i brought the bander also...
I pulled the testicles down into the scrotum, applied the bander with the fingers pointing up and slipped off the band up near the top of the scrotum.
Any tips or advice would be appreciated, have i followed the correct technique?
(nice to think I'm avoiding pulling and dragging with the burdizzo next October ;))

They really should be done for with covexin 8 or anything that covers them for Tetanus if they are being banded. Only time I ever seen cattle with tetanus(as in lockjaw tetany not grass staggers)was after banding animals that had not been vaccinated. These were all older animals though.never head of little calves been done...do they not end up very leggy and rangy if done that young?

Aru - I was thinking the same thing. Would it not be better to wait until they are older and capitalise on their natural hormones before castrating?

A guy in our group did half as calves and the squeezed the others at weaning. Said the bull calves did better than bullocks until he squeezed them, then the ringed ones out did the bulls. He kills everything and there was no difference on the kill out. We put lamb rings on the calves at a couple of days of age, didn't take a fop out of them. Horse them on and save yourself the hassle later on!

If they are that old they need a blackleg shot two weeks before hand and follow up shot when ringing them. You will need a big ring applicator, they are expensive. Think they are around 180-200 euro and the bands are a couple of quid each. If you only have a couple the burdizo would be cheaper option.

I was all ready to band bulls last spring and went to the vet for injections.

She warned me off banding. Said shed seen too many complications and leave them and squeeze at 12-13 months.

Honestly it's hard to know sometimes. We squeezed them two weeks ago
    And they are flying it.

Got simular advice from our vet but our bulls were well on at the time, as in heading up for 2 year olds. Got them squeezed (81 of them) over a period of a month and only had a problem with 2. One came right after about 2 weeks the other seems to have an abscess although it is not affecting him at the moment although one ball is getting bigger and more inflamed looking.
Vet is booked for Monday afternoon to check him out.
