    Hi guys,

Further to my thread last night about buying the 04 1.4 Petrol Golf and taking the advice given, today I went to look at an 04 1.4 Corolla hatch. It seemed mechanically fine but had quite a few imperfections, which put me off.

I then went to see an 04 1.6 Corolla T3 hatch which seemed absolutely perfect in every way. 103k miles, runs beautifully, not a scratch. New NCT. Just wondering will it rob me with petrol compared to a 1.4? And, any other downside I should expect with a car like this?

    Cheers :)

No. The difference is tiny. You're still lugging the same weight around.

Standard spec on those t3's is very generous too.
You know its a UK import anyway? Not a bad thing necessarily.

No it won't rob you on petrol :) but tax will be a little more at €514 per annum, it's €385 per annum on the 1.4

Get the 1.6! The extra grunt will be worth it. I could possibly be slightly better on petrol too. The 1.4's do about 36-38 mpg. I reckon you could get 38-40 from the 1.6. It will be a far nicer car to drive too.

    I have a 2001 corolla 1.4 with 400000km and it does 50mpg easy.

no the opposite actually, bought it with 74000 miles on it and drive about 30000 miles a year.not bad for a petrol car, original gearbox and clutch and engine.just add oil and petrol.

The 1.4 has 97bhp and is perfectly adequate. The 1.6 has 109bhp and in day to day driving it isn't that much better than the 1.4 imo.

It's not the same as other cases, such as the ford focus, where the 1.6 is much better than the 1.4 and is worth the upgrade.

I had one of these for a few months and there is no way they will do 50 mpg! Did you fill the car, drive a bit, and then re-fill and make not of the distance travelled and fuel used to work out the mpg? If not then I very much doubt it did 50.

They are an impressively frugal little car, I got 40 mpg without too much effort, and often saw 42-43, but definitely no more than that. These figures would have been achieved in a mix of runs between Cork and Galway, plus some town driving on top of that. Even on a motorway/main road the average fuel consumption (which in my experience is almost 100% accurate at calculating mpg) would never go above 45 mpg unless you drove like a nun - and even then 50 was not possible.

For a 1.4 there is plenty of performance in the 00-02 model Corolla and I wouldn't be going out of my way to find a 1.6 in one of these. It's probably not so good in the 02-07 model as that is heavier so a 1.6 is probably worth the extra motor tax there, but I can't say for certain as I've never driven that model Corolla and the 1.4's 96 bhp is almost as much as the 99 bhp a 1.6 Focus from that vintage provides so it can't be too bad. I'd still get a 1.6 because that will be a UK car and the spec will be far better than the atrocious levels of kit fitted to the Irish models at the time.

I know the corolla is a fuel efficient car but I've yet to see one do 600 odd miles to the tank

The most I got out of mine, vtti and 4e-fe was around 400 to 450 miles. That was a mixture of rural and urban driving.

Well i drive the car like there is no fuel in the tank...to get that mpg i drive it very easy,80kph max ,soft acceleration.very little braking, lots of coasting to junctions, good fuel, good tires.tbh i find it hard anymore to get that mpg since she passed 200000 miles.but 550 is still manageable

Wouldn't like to get stuck behind you on a windy N/R road trying to get 50 mpg out of your 1.4 corolla. My turbo diesel vectra does 52 MPG if I drive normally (for me that's at the speed limit where safe to do so) and would do 56-58 if I drive very easy. IMO it's not worth driving like a nun for 4-5 MPG more :D

And many do get stuck behind me lol,i do drive quick on the motorway as ive no choice lol.that car got me out of the resection and will be changed soon for a 2010 520 diesel

I have a 2001 saloon VVTI Corolla with 230,000 miles on the clock, and regularly get 530 miles from a full tank of petrol. I don't have a heavy foot but I'm not exactly a tortoise either.

Probably does help that the bulk of the driving is done at about 50 mph on primary roads and dual carriageways.
