Corolla Verso - strange noise whilst depressing clutch

Just had the car serviced a few weeks back and this noise has come into the car over the past two weeks. If I let the car idle it's fine. Once I put it into gear and release the clutch a horrible knocking noise comes into play. I've checked the clutch and it's ok. The noise is coming from the other side of the engine. If I switch on the air con the noise goes away. If I switch it off it comes back.

    Any ideas. It's a 2.0 d4d. 2005

    Sounds like a DMF failure.

When you say other side of engine do you mean drivers side?

I stand corrected, I thought those were DMF by 2005:P

It's coming from the fan belt/power steering pump side but down near the bottom. It's like a pulley is on its way out

It's only making the noise if the air con is off. When it's on there's no noise. That's what has me stumped!

My knowledge of aircon machinery isnt great but basically heres my understanding.

You have a belt constantly turning the compressor pulley. If it is switched on a magnet pulls the machinery in the compressor closer to the pully being turned and the compressor comes to life. It is like a clutch.

I would hazard a guess that maybe this pulley or a bearing is gone and it is causing the noise. When it is switched on the pully is stuck to the compressor and that makes the setup sturdy and stops the noise. This may not be the case but might make sense. First step is see if the noise is coming from the aircon box.

That actually makes sense! I know what I have to look at now. I'll let you know how I get on.

My explaination isnt great. I like this lads videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7yflp1WFrU and this one is on noisy air con compressors. You might find the explanation better and it might even allow you to fix the problem.

Just an update. It was the Air Compressor. Unfortunately you cant replace the pulley as it's not listed as a spare part and the unit is €1300 new. By the time you depressurise and recharge it's big money for a 9 year old car. Lucky I found a Toyota mechanic who changed the belt so I have no A/C but have normal air hot and cold with no noise. Seems to be a common fault with Avensis models also. Probably from lack of use.

Autoair in Meath can supply pulleys for these. So if your a/c was working ok apart from the noise then you should be able to get it sorted at a reasonable cost.
