Hi I've joined a small flying club in January where I've started my ppl , due to certain circumstances and due to the weather I've only really gotten a couple of lessons under my belt so fare , While I was at the club I noticed allot of students with log books and I was just thinking to my self should I maybe buy one ? My instructor hasn't told me to buy one . Anytime I did a lesson it was written and recorded and I've kept all of my flight log dockets with me for record of my own . So the question is there a need for me to buy a log book?

If you intend to go solo and then on to gain your PPL then yes you will require a logbook. Each flight should be recorded in the logbook and countersigned by your instructor.

A logbook is your own personal record of the flying you have done. The IAA will require your logbook for PPL issue.

Yes that logbook is fine. You are training for a JAR-FCL licence after all or EASA as it is now.

But I'm amazed none of this has been dealt with by an Instructor? All of this should have been explained to you. He or she should have signed off each lesson in your logbook immediately after the flight.

It makes me wonder what else they've neglected to tell you. I would hope you are aware that you also need a Student pilot's licence? To get this you'll need to pass the medical. You can't go solo without it.

Are you receiving pre and post flight briefings?

You'll really need to sit down and have a chat with an Instructor on this subject.

When I started learning to fly back in the darks ages I was treated much the same. I was only told I need an SPL when I was about to be signed off to go solo. I also has no ground briefings at all and Instructors were anyone who was spare and not propping up the bar. Apparently I should have known all this using my psychic powers, no internet back then.

I can't believe this nonsense is still going on. If you don't get an useful help from your Instructor. I suggest you find a club that knows how to treat it's members.

That's good! When you get your logbook, make sure you get your entries signed by the Instructor when you add them in. Still surprised it wasn't mentioned to you before now.
