How much should I pay for this TH Monaco?

First time poster in this forum so go easy please!!

A work colleague who I don't know that well is selling his Tag Heuer Monaco. It has been my favourite watch for a long time so I am keen on buying it but I have no clue of the value of a second hand version. I would also prefer if it had the leather strap but I can always change that afterwards.

I haven't seen it up close except when he has been wearing it the odd time.

He wants €3,100 for it so I am wondering if that is reasonable or am I mad to consider that price?

I am no authority on the Monaco but, as a guiding principle, it is always good to get the bracelet with the watch as one almost always gets gouged if you're looking for a bracelet later on.

http://www.chrono24.com/ is probably a good place to look around to gauge prices but always remember that the asking price isn't necessarily a perfect measure of actual value.

What CB says. On Chrono24 look more at private sellers listings. The dealer listings on that site can range from "ah that's a bit pricey" to "I'll have what they're smoking please". :) An ebay search would be another idea. Again look more at auctions and see what they go for rather than dealer pricing. Just had a quick look there and 3000 seems about the average, but there are cheaper by a few hundred quid(and more expensive of course), so the price he's looking for seems OK, especially if it has a bracelet.

As CB said and it's good advice trying to source a bracelet down the line will be expensive. On the other hand leather strap is cheap enough if that's the way you want to go. None of the ebay examples I looked at had a metal bracelet so it might be an expensive option?

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Does the watch come with original receipt, box and papers. I'd be looking for them. I suppose there's no warranty left.

Also, when was the watch last serviced? Ideally in the last couple of years - a THM service in an authorised dealer will cost you €500.

Hope it works out for you.

Thanks for the advice all. I definitely need to do a bit more homework, will probably leave it pass tbh even though I'd love to have it. Although I think with that asking price he might have it for another while and I could knock off a few hundred quid in a few months time. Same guy was selling his Jag 2 years ago for mad money and he is still driving it!! Receipts and the warranty or authorized dealer certificate would be prerequisites of course.

I've read that that Tags don't hold their value as well as some other makes, but I suppose that all depends on the forum your on! That particular style, was the watch that Jessie gave to Walter in the TV series Breaking Bad. This will have pushed up the second hand price a bit no doubt!

it seems a little pricey to me. I bought the same watch on a black leather strap last year second hand for E1,600.00. The strap was in bits though so bought a new one from watchstrap world for about E40.00. Even though the steel bracelets are not my cup of tea at all, i presume monacos with them are more expensive.

Mine came with all receipts, box, papers etc. I do know that i got an excellent deal on it and i've never seen another one at that price. I did asked to seller to take into account that it had never been serviced (bought new in 2008) and it would likely need one quite soon costing E300-400 which in fairness, he did.

That's my Monaco experience if that's any help to you!

Brand new from swiss watch direct with the leather strap is just under 4k. I would say he is a little over priced. 2800 would be fair I think assuming it is mint.

That was an absolute bargain, if you got that version for 1600.
