Keeping an old brown log book

I've been offered a car, that has two previous owners, both in the same family, neatly recorded on the brown log book which is kind of nice.

As I understand when I do a transfer of ownership, Shannon will keep the brown log book and send one of the new ones - is this right?

Is there anyway to request I can keep the old one, just for nostalgia value? i.e it would seem sensible that they could void it somehow but allow owners to keep them as part of the car's history?

Change of ownership using the old brown books are dealt with at your local motor tax office. Do not send it to Shannon.

Fill out a change of ownership form RF200 i think, you can find it online and print it out or get it a tax office or Garda station. both parties fill it out and the seller usually posts it with the brown book to their local tax office, and the brown book will be posted back to you with your details on it.

    Thank you that's great news.

They sent back my one alright, and told them at the counter that I wanted it back.

When I got it, they pasted a HUGE white sticker on it with my details, practically gumming pages together.

I brought mine directly to Wexford county council and the woman just filled in the details on the book and handed it back.
In fairness I was a little surprised at the respect she showed, when I told her I wanted to keep the original book she looked at me in a puzzled way and said " of course I will sure that's nearly as value able as the car "

Yeah I have the car since 2007 and because I didn't want to post the log book I decided that I'd bring it down the next time I was in Wexford, thing was anytime I was in Wexford I forgot the book. Fast forward to last year and there was panic to put it into my name before the declaration of non use deadline. As I said I was pleasantly surprised with her attitude all she said was it's advisable to present it in person just in case it gets lost.

I have one for my first car. How much are they worth?

Technically nothing not to mention it being illegal. Try and sell it and you might end up here.

The sale isn't illegal, what some people do with it afterwards is.

Ah I don't think I'd sell it...but my bathroom does need a facelift!
