My lovely 2009 Ford Mondeo Estate 1.6 petrol (which cost me a fortune in tax) now seems to cost me a fortune in tyres!!

Its on 215/55/16's (seems to be a big price diff between 205 and 215's). And I need to replace the front 2. Front two were Avon's I think and the back some chinese brand.

Its the family car we take to france every year so whilst I don't want to skimp I don't want to spend a fortune either. Average seems to be about €125 fitted for mid range set. Anyone got any better lately? (living in north county dublin by the way).

    thanks in advance.

For a mid range tyre you should be able to get them for €80 - € 100 each

    STARMAXX ST760 97W ULTRASPORT @ €80
    INFINITY ECOMAX 97W @ €80

    or you could buy online

don't skimp on tyres, they keep you on the road, we are all on a budget i know but tyres are not the place to make savings.

Imagine yourself in a continental rainstorm on cheap chinese tyres

To be honest OP that aint terrible price wise.
Having had experience with the cheap tyres id be looking at loosing the back two at some point soon. Part worn would be better then most Chinese/far east muck.
There is a place in blanch that was running a special on uniroyal rainsports at one point. Think it may have being alloywheels.ie.

    well they are way above

    HIFLY, SILVERSTONE, HAIDA, SUNEW, LANVIGATOR,
CARBON, SUNNY, PACE, HERCULES, WINDA, SAILUN,
SUNITRAC, TRAZANO, PNEUS POWER, LINGLONG, MAYRUN, BCT,

And lots more, I have Starmaxx on my car a RWD and they are a lot better the the Continental tyres that i had on before.

i buy part worn all the time and have made good savings. they are normally reputable brands

No interest in part-worns. I intend to keep the car for some time so no advantage.

Put a set of 205/55 16 on it. You can get a premium tyre in that size for under €100 each.

And then id need to change all 4!

Yes but you would then have decent tyres on the car and would be out of trouble from now on!

Better how exactly? I find it difficulty to believe a set of low to mid priced tyres will outperform a set of Contis technically, despite their overpricing.

205/55 16 is the most popular tyre size in europe. I guess that is why they are cheaper.

I need three 195's a couple of weeks ago I changed to 205's in the end and got 4 it was actually cheaper than 3 195's and I had a better choice too.

I wouldn't do chinese or part worns.

Ended up with Dunlop blu sport response from Discount Tyres in blanch. €87, a deal for getting 4. They got good reviews and no complaints so far.

I didn't like the conti in the wet, the Starmaxx are a lot better in the wet

What conti's and what was the thread depth left on them?

I don't like contis in the wet either. Mind you have on the camper, but the hankooks m&s where much better. I did consider them for the car as a result.

You now on the side of every tyre they have tread wear numbers. Michelin energy saver is 400 and the dunlops are 240. That means the michelin should last twice as long. They have no noticeable difference in the wet. So if the price was the same the michelin is in theory half the price per km.

I only found this out afterwards.

There was less than 6k miles on them 225/40/18 sport-conti2
