I am looking to start a web business and the domain I want is taken. It is available with a hypen though. It's a two word domain.

    Whats anyone's thoughts on this?

Hyphenated domains are a nightmare for word-of-mouth marketing. I had one for a few years and you could spend minutes trying to explain your domain name to someone on the phone - try that a few times a day, 5 days a week ...

The person that owns the domain is cybersquatting on it, and won't sell it. Is this allowed for .ie domains?

He owns a well known company and he has numerous domains that he is hoarding.

Should I let him know that he is in breach of IEDR policies? I really want to take this further.

If a registered domain name infringes on your rights you can lodge a dispute via the link above

He may not be in breach

    - you'd want to be sure before you accuse him of cybersquatting

    eg

you might complain to them that you are thinking of selling T-revs ( latest craze from Japan)

he might send them a photo of his consignment of them being forklifted into his warehouse

He has the domain since 2010. All of the domains he has hoarded were registered on the same day in 2010 and none of them have any development on them. They are all .ie domains.

You don't know what they're planning to do with them and if they're not "developed", so what? There's no obligation to develop a domain name or to develop it immediately

And it's not cybersquatting unless specific conditions are met. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybersquatting

As previously mentioned, if you have registered trademarks etc., that predate the domain name(s) then you can lodge a dispute.

They are not really viable yet for the Irish market and just over 300 of them are hosted on Irish hosters. There are more .US domains hosted on Irish hosters. The Irish market, in case anyone does know this yet, is centred on the .IE/.COM axis and this accounts for over 85% of the domains hosted here.

As Blacknight pointed out, you don't know what he is going to do with them. A significant percentage of domains are registered and do not have any websites associated with them. They may be used for e-mail or brand protection purposes.

Most of the time, when I see the term 'cybersquatting' being flung about, the people doing so do not understand what it entails. The .IE ccTLD does require proof of entitlement before a domain can be registered so the registrant will have provided proof such as a registered business name number from the CRO or a registered company name. This is quite different to .COM TLD where anyone can register a domain without proof and consequently true cybersquatting is far higher in that TLD.

Evidently you want to start a business and he has the domain name. His domain name predates your wish to start a business and possibly any proof of entitlement (trademarks or other rights) to that domain name. Therefore it would be rather difficult to claim that he is cybersquatting (if you have no rights to the name or mark) just because he got there first.

And one more thing - hyphenated domains generally suck because people tend to go to the non-hyphenated version. :)

.....because s/he registered the domain first and you cant use it......?

That person is perfectly in his rights and may not be domain squatting simply because there is a lack of development.

I have six .ie domains, two in use - and that's not looking any further than the .ie!

So you are allowed to register as many .ie domains as you like?

The one domain per registrant rule was abolished a long time ago. The main concern would be that you could prove the entitlement to the domains you want to register and pay for them.
