I've never supplied it. License is required however.

Sometimes required sometimes not, if you have any government issued brown envelope bring that with you in your hand to call their bluff, chances are they won't ask for it.

Officially it is required and they can refuse to test if it's not available but anecdotally it seems they don't usually ask for it.

Even if they ask you for it and you fail to produce it they will not fail you on it. If the car passes the test on everything else they will just not issue the pass cert until you come back with the logbook.

I'd mine there a few weeks ago, and simply told them I couldn't find it in the house they were fine when I had id

I'd say at least half of the people in the queue had the same excuse.

They can't refuse to test a vehicle because of missing VRC.
All they can do is to fail a test for missing documentation, with visual reinspection required.

    Conditions in respect of applications

    5. Where an application is made for a test, the issuing authority may refuse to carry out the test or a re-test—

    (a) on a vehicle in respect of which prior application for an appointment for the test or re-test had not been made,

    (b) where the appropriate fee under Regulation 6 has not been paid in respect of a test certificate,

    (c) where the owner or the driver of the vehicle to be tested fails to produce the vehicle registration book, vehicle registration certificate or vehicle licensing certificate in respect of the vehicle at the time of test or re-test,

    (d) where the vehicle identification number of the vehicle to be tested as shown on the vehicle registration book, vehicle registration certificate or vehicle licensing certificate, whichever is produced, is not the same as that on the vehicle,

    (e) where the issuing authority considers that the vehicle to be tested is in such a condition that it would not be safe or practicable to carry out the test or re-test, or

    (f) where the person who presents the vehicle to be tested fails to produce the required identification.

No matter what it says legally, they are not going to turn away your €55, when they know they can take it, test the car, and then give you 28 days to produce the registration cert (after which time they can charge you another €55 for a full retest).

Chances are they wont even ask; from what I have read it seems to be only people who test multiple cars regularly (ie garages) that get asked to produce the logbook.

Agreed. From the few quick glimpses I got at their screens during check-in I think they have all the important details about the car on their system anyway as it all comes from the same source (NVDF) as the registration documents so I can't think what purpose checking the documents would serve other that to prove you have them.

The requirement to bring the logbook was introduced after the whole scandal about testers being bribed was it not? Im not sure how it helps the matter, but I remember reading that the idea was to record who brought in which cars, and who tested them, so that they could see if there were patterns emerging between customers and testers (or something to that effect).

Nor does it make any difference if they bring the logbook, if its true that the NCT center can see all of the registration information anyway.

Maybe I have it wrong; I just seem to remember the two things being linked.
