While I await my fate courtesy of a Garda Van on the N4 this morning (pretty sure I am ok) but always paranoid, it got me thinking. Is there anyway to check if you have been caught prior to receiving the notice?

    The reason that I ask:

What if I had to leave Ireland for a number of weeks, therefore missing the fixed charge notice and incurring a heavier fine and knowing this, I wanted to check in advance before I leave?

    Surely this should be possible?

Not sure it would be the best idea to call the Gardai and ask them did the van catch you speeding earlier, or did you get away with it? You either weren't speeding and don't care, or you were and you're wondering if you're caught.

I don't have an answer for your question OP, but there seems to have been a blitz on the N4 both inbound at Lucan and inbound/outbound at Liffey Valley in the past week weeks. Garda vans, not Go Safe, and yes obvious places, but in my 6 or so years driving this road daily, I cannot recall seeing checks so often in such a short space of time.

Yep you are right. I drive this road every day and it has picked up big time. This morning the van was heading into town just after the Spa Hotel, (around the bend)! I had cruise control on but speedometer showed just past 80 which has me worried.

It just seems really strange that you cannot voluntarily find out if you have been caught. If I have then its fine but I would like to know in advance if I so choose!

Depends what you mean by "just past 80" but if your speedo was reading 82-83 then youll be fine.

Especially if it was a garda and not a go$afe van. Even if you were going an actual 82 kmh you'd probably get away with it.

    Do they flash at all?

The Go Safe vans don't, I am unsure about the current Garda vans - I am interested to know myself...but in any event, would they even flash in daylight?

    Can anyone offer advice here?
Tonight I was driving home and my phone in the side pocket (driver's door) lit up just as I could make out 'garda' on top of a high vehicle coming towards me.. They didn't flash but instead put the hazards on and half slowed down, weird I thought and carried on. There were cars behind them too, I kept driving not sure what to do, and they didn't come after me., but I'm now thinking it must be more than a coincidence? Did it look like I was using it? Would they have turned a camera on or something maybe, even taken the reg down.?Lesson learned either way, keep phone well away!
