According to the Irish Times Facebook page, minister Alan Shatter has resigned. Can't post a link as I am a new user sorry - maybe a mod can edit.
THE TAOISEACH HAS announced that Justice Minister Alan Shatter has resigned.

Reading a statement to the Dáil today, Enda Kenny said that Shatter had taken the decision on foot of the publication of the Guerin Report into Garda whistleblowers. The Taoiseach said that Shatter had taken the decision “with a considerable amount of dignity” and that he had accepted his resignation with “great reluctance”.

The Taoiseach said that the 300-page Guerin Report, which was commissioned to investigate the reporting of confidential information by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe, had made Shatter feel that it was “his duty” to resign as Justice Minister. The report concludes, Kenny said, that there was an inadequate response to Maurice McCabe’s submissions.

The Taoiseach said that he had not sought Shatter’s resignation. Enda Kenny said that Shatter’s legislative achievements would “stand the test of time”.

I wonder who will fill his office? Will there be any changes.

I heard someone on the radio saying he was a hard working Minister, even in his part time role as Minister for Defense he was quoted 'as putting in more hours than any full time Minister'.

Hopefully the next one will have a bit of knowledge and interest in the Gardaí and prison service. The two organisations are at breaking point when it comes to morale and resources.

It would also be nice to have a minister that wants more frequent and faster recruitment drives :cool: and with bigger numbers :D

Afaik, anyone from the Dail or Seanad can be appointed to the role, technically. Doesn't have to be a member of government.

Not that there's much chance of it happening, but the roles of MoD & MoJ should be made separate again and the best people from the Dail or Seanad appointed to both positions until matters are sorted out. Rather than just throwing someone in as a careerist move.

    Wishful thinking sadly !

Him gone or not won't make a blind bit of difference. The damage is done and the budget is the budget.

RTE news putting their money on Frances Fitzgerald to take over.......

Not sure how I feel about that, I don't know much about her at all - but it would mean that all the top law/justice jobs (DPP, AG, CJ, (acting) Commissioner and MoJ) would be held by women.

    Interesting!

ETA - oh, and the first all-female sitting of a Special Criminal Court bench is happening at the moment. Wimmin taking over at last!

    ....and its Frances Fitzgerald.

Now with a acting (but should be confirmed shortly) Commissioner, AG and Minister all women might be no harm to get a grip on the Dept and get some confidence back in the Force.
