    A duck egg will work.

I caught a blast of magpies in my garden with a larsen. I was using a call bird though. My friend caught a bird using a dead magpie that he had shot in a larsen, it got him started.

I found the green plastic coated traps with the slidding door effective they are a 4 compartment.

Mac Eoin / Dingle Poultry supplies do Larson traps make all shapes and sizes AFAIK. One Larsen trap is just as good as another, provided its used properly.
I've heard donkeys down through the years on about how this particular Larson is better than the other, they all do the same thing at the end of the day. Just set it up properly and you should start catching, a bird from a different area is also a big help..

    Dingle Poultry supplies will deliver.

They look something like the larsen mate traps for catching a call bird to use in larsen traps! Nice neat little trap but mightn't be able to get them here!

You'd be better off using a Larsen in my opiniin, because you only catch one bird at a time in those traps in the link, and if you have a breeding pair, the second bird might avoid the trap after seeing his comrade getting caught! With a Larsen, you csn pop the trapped bird in the middle compartment and your sure to get the second bird!

I've already seen some fledglings about so you want to act fast! Maybe someone on here lives in your area and might pop a cage in your garden for a few days!

I have heard good things about their 4 compartment cage, a friend of mine has one and he has trapped hundreds of magpies since he got it a good few years ago. Although he told me recently that only once ever did he have 4 magpies caught at one time. He often had 3s.

Homebread bread or white sliced bread. Could also use eggs or cut pieces of raw meat. Bread is very good even though you'll probably catch a few jackdaws too :). Once you catch one, it isnt much good as a call bird for the centre compartment of your cage. The magpie must come from a different area. But ask around, find someone else who has a magpie cage and swap magpies. A foreign magpie will drive the magpies in your area mad, they are territorial and will want to kill that magpie, thus easy trapping :)

The magpie will work lad, maybe not as well as one from another area but it'll work to catch its mate, and thats what the op is setting out to do! You'd be surprised what he'd catch from the back garden!

Sorry, the bird from the same area would probably work too, catch a couple, I don't know to be honest as I never used a call bird from the same area that the cage is placed in. I just always assumed that it had a very limited effect/result. Although I have read how some people have caught magpies using a plastic decoy magpie in the centre compartment, so I suppose there is multiply methods. The main thing is that you catch them! :)

You need to put in a perminent perch in the middle compartment for that lad now, and cable tie a tin can to side of cage beside perch so he wont contaminate the water!
He'll be dead within days if you dont do this!

Saying that, if you only intend to catch the breeding pair, it doesn't really matter!
