    my 2002 audi a3 petrol
    70k miles on it
time belt done at 50k = 5 years ago

    ( they say every 90k miles or 5 years . )

it it worth paying 525 quid for new time belt
on top of service for 240 quid ?

seems steep for me for a car worth approx 2k ( if lucky ) ?

car is grand , and cant afford new one !

any advice - many thanks for the help.

Christ surely you can get it done cheaper than that?

If you don't do it then it's just a waiting game. It will snap at some stage and finish the car for good.
Why ruin a good car. I'd say you can get it done for about €300-350.

'car is grand , and cant afford new one !'

There is your answer. If the belt snaps you'll have to shell out for an engine re-build. Could be equivalent to value of car. Get the belt done, it is one of the most vital components in an engine.

BTW what part of the country are you in? I know a lad near me that specialises in VW's/Audi's and he will do it for a lot cheaper than what you've been quoted.

They're crazy prices you're being quoted. I got timing belt done on a diesel octavia using genuine parts for €300 and a service for €80. All done by full time Skoda mechanic. Where are you living?

I have a receipt in my room for 8 plugs on a gtv, a compression test and an oil change for 500 quid.......that's from an alfa specialist as well.

240 is steep alright especially if it's just for an oil change. If other stuff is getting done maybe not.

Op with regards a belt, it shouldn't be that much. I'd pm George dalton on here. Knows his stuff when it comes to German stuff and can't see it costing that much.

Jesus Christ 525. Paid a mate 80 bucks plus parts to do the same. Apparently Audis are one of the easiest cars on the road to change a TB.

Took him at most 2 hours but he has a lift and full garage setup.

525 for TB alone is like telling me you're paying 500 to have brake pads changed. Madness.

"On 22 June 2007, Pearson, Simon, Soter, Warshaw & Penny, LLP and the Law Office of Robert L. Starr filed a class action lawsuit against Volkswagen Group of America, alleging that the timing belts for model year 1999–2003 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles equipped with a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine fail prematurely."

Theres a few recalls on them. Worst is probably the cluster that dies and brings the immobiliser with it. Easily a 2k fix as the codes have to be gotten from Germany and cluster has to be new.

Its always the turbos that seem to go on the 1.8t prematurely. Never really heard of the TB if they are changed regularly. did mine at 80 for the first time and old one wasnt worn or damaged. Mate is an Audi Mechanic and he says hes seen them last to 120 which i thought was crazy.

Im in the dublin 12 area ,

I had a feellng this was a complete rip alright.

the service is just standard service , far as i can see the car is fine , maybe new wipers . brakes seem ok.

i keep the oil / water etc topped up and look after car as much as my limited skills allow .

    So oil and filter change?

    No plugs, pads etc?

I'd never pay a garage to do wipers. I'd use the money in save on that to buy better wipers/replace more often.

They sound like main dealer prices to me. No added value in bringing a 12 year old car to a main dealer for that sort of work imo.

Go to an independent for the service. Oil change service for that car should be no more than €100 euro. TB change can be done for €300 in lots of places. Buy your wipers from a motor factors, halfords or ebay for a fraction of the dealer cost. They are just clip ons and simple to change yourself.
