Howdy - is MS Office a standard price? Or can you get it relatively cheaply anywhere? TIA

I think generally its a standard price. If its just for home use or basic business use, you should consider LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice, two free alternatives that do pretty much exactly as Microsoft Office does.

don't even consider ms office, open office is free and just as good, all docs can be converted to ms office if u need that

What are you doing in it that you can't do in one of the alternatives?

Have a look at www.software4students.co.uk or even the .ie version of it. Seriously good value there.

Thanks for all the replies. My only use for it really is that I find excel very handy for manipulating figures and I'm sending out CV's, which I need to have in MS Word format presumably, for the recipient to open the doc? If I download a free one, do I need further software to convert their text docs to MS word format?

No you don't need to convert, you can save as .doc (and I think .docx now but I'd test that first)

There's also Google Drive as an option if you have a Gmail account already: https://drive.google.com

Ok, I'll try that out later. Can I edit a word document saved to Google Drive I wonder? I need to tailor the CV and cover letters, so need to be able to edit.

Thanks for the info anyway. I should get a chance this evening to install one of the free ones and see how it works in terms of sending in Word format.

My advice would be to try LibreOffice and OpenOffice, and also the online Google Docs facility, before investing in Office. There's no point in spending a fortune on Office when the free ones are just as good.

Since it's just CV's then libreoffice will do fine

    - just remember to get the UK / GB version and not the US version ( this goes for all word processors including word )

you can set it to save to .doc (word) format by default - agencies like this because they can just remove your contact details and forward it on

it can also produce .pdf's too , handy for CV's going direct to employers

Hi - Would you mind just looking at this link and see whether I've got the correct page? http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/

Do I just click on 'Download Version 4.2.3' ?

Sorry - I'm just paranoid about downloading a virus or something!!!!

Hmmmm - Windows Installer blocked me from installing this. It says I should contact the vendor to verify that it is a valid Windows Installer package. DOH!
