I operate a very small hobby "business", things went better than expected and I made an 'accidental' return last year of €900, am I expected to pay tax on this, or what is expected of a hobby business like mine?

Income Tax yes, given the small amounts you can fill out a form 12. VAT no.

    Thanks Ciaran

Another question either you or someone could help me with, a company I will use for distribution servers in Germany is asking me for a VAT number, how do I go about getting one, or is it even necessary for me to get one, or is there an alternative I can give them?

Tell them you are not vat registered

If they need a tax number give them your PPS - but make it clear you are not registered for VAT

Of yourse you can register but given your turnover i dont think the extra admin involved would be worth it
