I'm unable to attend a court date today, should I ring the court office before I'm due to appear or is there any point? Do I contact the arresting guard after non appearance?

It all depends on the reason and why you are in court.

Someone who was meant to cover me for work fell through. It is for a minor road traffic offence

Anyone? I'm just wondering should I ring court office to inform them?

Why not get a solicitor to represent you? At least that way you will have some representation in court. Also have you informed your employer of this it is up to them to arrange cover.
