Right lads, So I just turned 21 the other day. I'm after saving and getting a fair bit of money together. I have absolutely no plans for the summer. I think I'd like to travel but I'm not entirely sure where to.

Looking back maybe some of the elders could shed some wisdom on how to make the most of this. What would you do if you were in this scenario?

An adventure with a Nigerian prince is all the rage these days (he may need a deposit), I got an email from a young gentleman a few days ago, will pass on his details to you.

Travel to Australia. I hear it's pretty much undiscovered by the Irish.

Are you going to college already ? , plan on going ? , are you going to stay in Ireland or are you willing to move/work abroad ?

The thought of spending it all on a mad holiday for 2 months is good, but I'd probably look at something more long term.

-Spend it on a course that you can use later, maybe a TEFL / CELTA, so you can teach English Abroad.
-Some computer course if that's what you're into
-A J1 like someone else mentioned

Honestly - go and travel. Broaden your mind. Meet new people. Gain some perspective. The world is a whole lot bigger/interesting/dangerous/craic than your own little patch of Ireland.

Personally Id recommend a bike-packing trip across Europe using the EuroVelo routes. Takes in all of the best bits of Europe from northern Scandinavia to Southern Italy and totals some 7000+ Km of routes. Nothing beats seeing the world by bike and you will meet loads of folks doing it. Bloke on tinternet did all of it in about 4.5 months of biking/B&Bing/Camping. If that's too daunting another option could be to bike the Camino de Santiago (Your front door to west coast of Spain), or around Iceland (little trickier research on weather required).

Having said that, a friend of mine had a session in all 32 counties over the summer that he finished his leaving cert which I though was a fairly good way of breaking oneself in for first year in College =)

And if you end up utterly skint buying a bike & preparing for this - F*ck it - your 21, you've plenty of time to make it up again.

    Some visual stimulation for you...
    Awesome Fun Times

    More Iceland

    Even More =)

If I had my time again (and the money) I would buy an old volkswagen camper van and hit the road in the direction of europe. See where that takes me and for how long.

Accepted that nowadays a volkswagon camper will not get you further than the M50, but you get the point!
Hit the road grasshopper. Report back here in September.

    I don't believe you're 21.

No genuinely young person would go looking to a load of old people for life advice.

Unless they want to ignore it and do the complete opposite.

If it looks like you could get your leg in there up to your knee, you might want to rethink that plan.

I wouldn't bother going somewhere exotic, personally - there's nowhere left, it's all been ruined by backpackers and other tourists. Phuk Phuket, to Hell with Hanoi, Bugger Bora Bora.

Instead, save your money for when you're going to need it e.g. you're probably still a long way short of a deposit on any kind of property, now that the bubble is being inflated again.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

If you want to make your money last go over to eastern Europe.

    How utterly dull!

Go travelling, South America or south-east Asia would be my recommendation.

Go, but not with friends. They are a liability and you'll get to know more people on the way on your own.

Don't bother with a car or campervan, especially in Europe. Those things would just suck the money out of you and you'll be cutting your trip short. Public transport is so good throughout Europe you can get everywhere worth going to by bus or train.

Even buying a tent is pointless, any campsite will have tents for renting. I brought a tent with me and only used it once or twice, waste of time.

A mix of drugs, hookers and travelling. It will make a man out of you.

I never understood how college students could save up money. I had college monday-friday and worked 20 hours per week at the same time and never had any savings. How is it done?!

Im in a similar situation as the OP.

Im heading off to Scandinavia for three months. Basing myself in Copenhagen. Going to try and see as much of Sweden and Norway as I can too. Going to try to make it up as far north in norway as i can to see the northern lights and such.

    Can't wait :D

Get over to Brazil during the World Cup!! Amazing country & such an eye opener to see such contrasts within the country & the contrast between there & here. The place will be great craic during the world cup even if you're that not bothered about football. You'll meet people from all over the world & possibly bag yourself an invite to another new country while you're there! They're short of good English speakers in a lot of areas so you might even find a bit of work while you're there too & save some money or get some free board. Plus its feckin huge & the people are so lovely- you could travel it for months & never get bored of it.

    Go travelling OP.

But don't do a J1 - you'll just end up living with 12 other 21 y/o Irish lads who've never been away from Mammy and liable to **** in your sink. You will learn nothing from the whole experience.

Go the independent route - don't fall in with others looking for a "mad adventure" that sees you all simply socialising with each other, just in another country for a few months.

    South America, Japan, etc etc
