    Hi all,
I'm currently finishing up with the PDE and I have an interview next week for an Irish job for next year. I was just wondering if anyone would have any advice on preparations or types of questions which could be asked? Also, would the whole interview take place as Gaeilge or would it be half and half?
    Thanks so much!!

Depends on the type of school and the number of people on the panel. The more on the panel, the less chance it will be all through Irish, as they won't all speak Irish. Usually one or 2 interviewers will ask questions in Irish and the others in English.

Questions in general will relate to the ethos of the school and how you would maintain it/fit in with it.

How will you make Irish interesting?

How would you teach a specific topic?

Thoughts on homework, discipline, examining students.

What do you think of the JCSA?

What about the Irish curriculum for JCSA?

The 40% oral, do you agree with it?

Extra curricular, what are you willing to do, able to offer etc.

    Really, they can ask anything!!

I would go on the school website and read their policies, so that your answers will be in keeping with them. ;)

Well done on getting interview!! I have gaeilge too and out of all the interviews I've done only one ever asked me a single question as gaeilge which he read off a sheet and he sat blank at me as I answered, I think he just wanted to tick a box! All of the above questions are great. They may ask you about the course. I always bring a mini portfolio with me and hand each a copy mid interview or just at the end. Has worked every time and really sets you apart!

Unlikely it would be all in Irish (as chances are not all interviewers will be proficient) but you should be expecting half of it (but probably will be less than half). When I did interviews for Irish there was a designated person on the panel who conducted a part of the interview exclusively through Irish.

Expect a question on promotion of Irish around the school & how to generate enthusiasm for it (I would suggest ideas for the promotion of spoken Irish). I was never asked anything specific about the syllabus but that's not to say it wouldn't happen, and to be honest I only ever did two teaching interviews in my life so there are others who are far more qualfied to comment on what the general practice is. For example, I would never have dreamt of handing a portfolio to anyone.

I have been asked what my favourite poem is and why!!! Was half tempted to say that I didn't like poetry, but I wanted the job :)

Yep, it fairly threw me 'cause I was just after finishing the PDE so hadn't learned off any poems in a long time. Even during my degree, I hadn't come across any poems I enjoyed enough that I wanted to know them off by heart. Was never the biggest fan of filíocht, apart from the odd poem. If I was asked now, almost a year later, I'd probably launch into "Mo ghrá go daingean tú, lá dá bhfaca thú, ag ceann tí an mhargaidh..." I like the rythm of it. ;):D
