    Hi,

I'm currently looking at the Audi A3, I was always set on buying a golf but recently I have started looking at the Audi for its similarities but more luxurious feel compared to the golf. I'm just wondering what is the better of the two engines, I have heard some horror stories about the 2.0 but it seems there are a good few for sale for reasonable money. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

    2.0 for refinement
    1.9 for reliability (mostly)

What year is the A3, there were different varients of those engines used in the A3 since it's launch back in 1996.

1.9 TDi was available from 1996 onwards in the A3, it changed to the 1.9 PD TDi engine in 2003 and was discontinued in 2010. 2.0 PD TDi was available from 2004 onwards and replaced with the 2.0 CR TDi in 2009.

Used to believe this. Heard nothing but praise for the 1.9 Tdi PD. Two years of ownership in it needed a VGT, tandem pump, injector seals (filled the sump with diesel), coolant sensor, suspension bushings, two back brake calipers, windscreen seal started leaking and the syncro in third gear is gone. The car only had 110,000 miles when bought and all that happened in the following 15,000 miles.

They are largely reliable, my dad ran one in a 2009 Superb for 3 and a bit years and clocked up over 200k Kilometers in that time without one problem, more economical than the 1.6tdci Mondeo that replaced it too.

Also, was it serviced regularly before you purchased it?

The year I would be looking at is 2004 onwards. What's the difference between a pd and a cr Tdi?

Pd is the older type Diesel engine. The cr is the more modern common rail set up. The 1.9tdi only came in pd from. 2.0tdi came in both depending in year. And the newer 2009 is on came with a 1.6tdi cr engine which replaced the 1.9tdi pd.
I have a 1.9tdi pd golf and find the engine good. It isn't as powerful as the 2.0tdi but in golf or a3 the 1.9tdi certainly doesn't feel underpowered. The 1.9tdi is generally more reliable than the 2.0tdi pds.
