Kia warranty - alright to use local mechanic?

My local mechanic tells me that he can now service my Kia and keep within the warranty.

Any older posts I read on here seem to give conflicting advice. My mechanic referred to some law changing in the last 2 years or so.

I have been using this mechanic for years and he always does a good job. Plus the nearest Kia garage is an hour away.

Is there any disadvantages to using a local garage rather an authorised Kia one? Could it affect resale value in the future? Or if I have to go the Kia dealer for a job that my mechanic can't do but it is covered by the warranty?

It ok once he uses approved kia parts, might be worth keeping reciepts

You should phone Kia Ireland and ask.

No point on going on what your mechanic or someone on boards says.

For some reason on kia.ie there is no contact telephone number - only option email - waiting for a reply.

    this

I think EU trade laws mean they couldn't monopolise the work anymore but they usually insist on KIA-approved parts

    As with my nissan warranty.

Buy the parts and keep receipts of parts and work.

work must be done by "a reputable garage"

    Technically its fine BUT

if you have any big warranty claim. First thing they will do is try use the outside mechanic as a excuse to void warrenty.

Where if you use a kia dealer it wont be a question. Can make warrenty work alot easyer

When I get my car back from my vw dealer software updates is always included would you miss out on that with your local mechanic ?

Afaik with warranties you can get your mechanic to do the servicing as long as he uses correct parts and sticks to the servicing schedule. You'll need receipts to prove this obviously.

I know some warranties also insist that your car is inspected by a main dealer every 12 months also, Mitsubishi for example, generally this is free although a nominal charge may apply.

I can't say for sure if Kia or Hyundai expect the annual inspection to be performed however.

Don't think the extended (extra 4) years of the warranty fall under the block exemption rules. I'm pretty sure you need to use a kia dealer and do annual inspections.

It definitely needs the annual inspection by Kia, just checked a service book there.

That was my thinking on seeing the tread - ie - because the warranty is so long - Kia could possibly get away with been more stringent on their conditions after say 3 years.

I believe that when you get past year 3 or 4 Kia starts excluding things that were covered for the first few years.

On a related note - Sister in laws brother was considering a Sorento Mk 1 at one point - so I looked up a Uk Kia forum.

Someone on there was claiming that Kia were been fussy about warranty claims - apparently trying to claim (for example) that a turbocharger was a serviceable part

Again - for the benefit of the OP - its worth making the point that there is a mileage limit on the Kia warranty - of 150,000 kms.

Not really a huge mileage limit for a 7 year warranty - with it been just under 94,000 miles.

Exactly, this is my thinking too. The EU definition is to cover the legally required 2 year warranty, I have serious doubts how it could possibly apply to extended warranties which are seperate from this.

258 miles a week. Most would be under it.

Possibly - but it wouldn't take much (imo) to run out of miles

94,000 miles in 7 years is quite low mileage imo

O I agree. Id never stay under it. I do about 300 miles a week.

But my van has unlimited mile. 5 year warranty.

    Cheers for all the replies.

This is the email response I got from Kia Ireland:

"We would recommend that you have your vehicle serviced at your local KIA Dealership, both to ensure that the vehicle is serviced to KIA standards and to ensure that you are up to date with any product enhancement campaigns and software updates. However, having the vehicle serviced elsewhere will not necessarily invalidate your warranty as long as you ensure that all terms and conditions are met. The most obvious one would be to ensure that all genuine KIA parts and correct oils etc are used during servicing and that you can provide proof of this when required - I would also recommend that you read the terms and conditions in your warranty handbook."

I think I'll get the car serviced with Kia - too much hassle going through local mechanic especially since I may have to provide proof of every part used/work done.
