    Folks,
Wondering if anyone has any ideas here.
Have had an intermittent problem with vw golf 1.9tdi. It has cut out while driving and then wont start. The first time it happened, in Feb, it was towed to the garage but then started without problem. It happened again and this time the fuel pump was replaced. That was about 2 weeks ago. Anyway same thing happened again today, wouldnt start.
Anyone seen this before or have any thoughts?
    thanks

You'll need it scanned to get any faults and work from there. I'm based in Tallaght if you're anyway close and could scan it with Vagcom.

I'm going to make a few assumptions here. I assume that if your garage swapped out the fuel pump, they did it after they scanned, and saw that there was possibly low pressure on the fuel rail. If the problem still persists, then there is a good (and very unfortunate) chance that one or more of the injectors are on the way out.

More than likely, when you get it back to the garage, they will do a leak-back test. That will show if the injectors are working the way they should or not.

However, that is worst case scenario. It might be something as simple as a fuel filter. Perhaps try getting that swapped out first. It's the cheapest option, but may be the cause.

Other than that, without more info, it could be anything really!

I jacked it up and got it started. A tow truck guy told me that cars won't start often do after being hoisted up on tow truck. Anyway was able to drive it to garage. They couldn't find anything wrong. Fuel filter was fine. Its driving fine at minute but there was no warning when this happened before. Btw Its 2008 with 180k up.

This sounds a lot like a crank sensor.
Does it cut out when the engine is warm? Then restarts once it has cooled down?
Seems very odd that nothing is showing up on the ECU though

The same problem happened me last night. It happened as I was going around a roundabout in second gear all of a sudden it just starting losing power and wouldn't start again. Once I push started it, didn't have a problem again.

Yours sounds like a bad earthing wire or worse case bad alternator.

As Bear1 said it does sound like crankshaft/camshaft sensor.

Came across a similar problem on an 05 skoda octavia awhile back where is wasn't logging any faults and cutting out...

It maybe worth while checking the wiring loom supplying the camshaft sensor....See my posts...

Yes it did, when driving along, this happened twice over space of 4 months. Couldnt get it restarted. After the second time the fuel pump was replaced. Hasnt cut out while driving but had the problem starting it during the week.

When the crank shaft sensor fails or begins to fail to tell tale signs are as follows:

Car starts perfectly when ice cold or cooled down, then once the car gets to it's normal operating temp it will cut out.
It will not restart no matter how hard you try until the sensor/engine has began or is cooled down.
It can fail at any speed and at any time so I'd give replacing that a go before anything else.
I had it happen to me in my old car doing 140kph and it wasn't a nice feeling.
They are relatively cheap and easy to replace so try that.
