    Hi,

Have nct wednesday but just realised my tax is out since last month. Going to book tax 2moro but prob won't have disc in time.

Will they automatically fail me if car isn't taxed or do they even check it?

    No, they don't care.

And fyi, you don't need tax on the car if you're driving straight to the nct centre and straight home afterwards (or wherever the car's parked off the road)

Could you quote the law allowing for that?

whereas a decent gard would let you off in those circumstances, I think it's still an offense not to have tax up. There's nothing to stop you getting tax with no NCT, so why would there be a dispensation?

You can test it while declared off the road and for this purpose you can have it on the road to get it to and from the test.

If the OP's tax is out a month, but hasn't declared it off the road, then they're going to pay the tax anyway.
Also is it not 2 months out of tax before it can be impounded?

Still an offense not to display a disc I reckon.

If you are paying on line print off the copy of the receipt and have in car for Gardai if stopped it will not be an issue. As said above the NCT centre will not even check the vehicle for tax.

    Indeed this FAQ confirms it.
I asked you about relevant regulations, as we already had a discussion once or twice on this forum, where this FAQ was quoted, but no one could find relevant law. Possibly such law doesn't exist, and text of this FAQ is just entertaining imagination of it's author ;)

    Not necessarily.
AFAIK last year changes to off-the road declarations, hasn't changed anything in regards driving untaxed car.
    It's still an offence.

It is. Tax must be out by more than 2 months before car can be impounded.

While talking to a local employee in the tax office, he informed me of that.

ya that is true your are exempt from having car tax while driving on the public road, if you promise to go straight to the Nct centre and straight home after the test.

Not quite true. You are permitted to drive to the NCT centre and back whilst the vehicle is declared on a SORD..not quite the same thing

Heh motor tax employee would be the last source of information for me.
Chances of them having it all wrong are nearly certain.
