Which lane on an island?

Just out of curiosity how others were taught.

Take a four exit roundabout so exit to the left, straight on, to the right and all the way round with a standard two lane approach.

The way i was taught was left hand lane for first and second exit and right hand lane for third and fourth exit.

    But others know it differently.

Ive had instances where a driver has nearly gone into me as we both take the second exit and im in the left lane and hes in the right

This is Ireland where you didn't even have to do a test at 1 point and still aren't tested on a motorway.

People don't know how to use roundabouts and I really think they should all be replaced with signal junctions.

Your thinking would generally be correct although if there are 2 lanes in and 2 lanes out on the straight ahead exit, both lanes entering could go straight ahead.

What's with the 'island' stuff in the title when you're asking about a roundabout? This has been done to death in other threads.

Can you start by telling us if there are lane markings (left/straight ahead/right arrows) in the two lanes leading into the roundabout because virtually every roundabout with two entry lanes has such markings. General rule is that if you are going left or straight ahead, entering in the left lane is OK but the lane markings take precedence. Going right or doing a 'U' turn you must be in the right lane.

OP, I know it the same as yourself, however the rules of the road have changed in recent years which state that the left lane should be for exit 1 and 2, whereas the right lane should be for exit 3 only. The only instance where the right lane should be used for exit 2 is if the road markings state that it is ok, or if there is an obstruction in the left lane.
