Car warranty

    Hi,

    Just wondering what the usual would be in the following scenario:

    My car is still under warranty (bought second hand from a dealer) and it today developed the serious problem of the wipers stopping working. Just had a horrific drive to bring it from Cork back up to Galway (in intermittent rain with no wipers). I need the car this week and cannot take any time off work to bring it to where I bought it (a couple of hours drive away). So my question is, if I get it fixed in the mini specialist in Galway (I already took it to a mechanic in Cork who couldn't fix it today), could I send the bill to the seller, or is it just my problem that I can't get to him?

    Thanks for any advice.

    If it's a relatively new car and still under manufacturers warranty then you can bring it to any dealer that deals in that particular make. However I get the feeling this is not a new car so you will have to bring it back to the selling garage to get any repairs done. Some dealers may allow you to get it fixed at a trusted garage and send them repair the bill but this would be rare and would be something you would have to talk to the selling garage about before proceeding with.

    No its 2006. I already had a problem with the car (check engine light on) that I phoned the seller about a week after buying and left a message, but he never got back to me, so I doubt he would about this either. Which is why I'd sooner get it sorted here and then bill him.

    Ring the garage, chances are if they're straight up they'll look after it being fixed up near you. If they say bring it down don't bother and get it sorted near home.

    As the car is basically undriveable I've left him a message asking he if wants me to fix it here or for him come and collect it and tow it back to his garage.

    You need to contact the garage you bought it from as it sounds like the warranty is with them. Don't get it fixed somewhere else unless they agree to pay for it first otherwise you could have a battle on your hands getting them to cover the cost. I have a feeling though they will want you to bring it to their mechanic to be looked at.

    Yeah,

    As I said I've already had an issue with the car that he never responded to. I've left him another voice message about this issue, but what can I do if he chooses to not reply?

    I have to have the car driveable this week and its due to rain every day so I can't drive it up to his garage anyway, as its too dangerous.

    Unfortunately there is no easy solution to this that I can see. He probably knows you live a great distance from him and getting the car to him is hassle so he could be ignoring you in the hope you just go away. Unfortunately this is the joy of buying a used car from a garage that is very far from you and a lot of hassle getting it back there. The warranty really becomes useless for the most part.

    What you need to do is decide if getting it fixed locally and quickly at your own expense is less hassle than trying to chase the garage you bought it from and then have to drive the car all the way there. I doubt very much arriving at his door with a repair bill from another garage will bare any fruit.
