If you received this as a gift what would you think of it? Brother is law birthday present to be specific..

Who makes Sekonda and what kind of movements is this particular model likely to have? Its a very nice looking watch since I looked at it in store today.

I said I'd ask the experts here before I bought it.

Only thing that bothered me was that it said 'assembled in china' on the back.

I wouldn't look down on any watch given to me as a gift, I would just appreciate the thought that had been put into it.

As for Sekonda I do own one which the wife purchased in the airport for me a few years ago on our way to get married in Barbados. I wore it for the ceremony and I still wear it now and again and would never dream of parting with it. Chances are the movement will be a Miyota (Citizen) quartz and will work without any problems bar a battery change in 2 or 3 years.

How could I tell what movement it would be using? A citizen movement would rule out any concerns I might have. My concern is the quality of the components used.

Your particular Sekonda there looks very decent I have to say.

This Accurist might be worth a look also. I believe they use Citizen movements, but I'm open to correction. BTW it's 45mm in diameter and not a light watch - would suit a bigger wrist.

Their wiki page is worth a look.... they provided watches for the early Concorde pilots....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accurist

The Sekonda is good value - it's hard to get a decent chronograph for that money.

I would bet that Sekonda is using all Citizen made movements, Lorus and Pulsar will be using movements by Seiko.

Personally I would not spend more than €50 on a Sekonda, mine is only a €25 watch and for that it was decent value. At the €90 you are considering spending I would be looking at picking up a Seiko or a Citizen chrono from creationwatches, allow 10-20 euro on top for import charges.

What about a Seiko 5 automatic?

I think its a very smart-casual every day watch, a lot of watch for the money.

Thanks for the replies. His birthday is on wednesday so timing wise I won't be buying online even though some great suggestions there.

This Pulsar good value? Should be a Seiko movement?

This Accurist looks really nice... Any thoughts?

The Pulsar has a 2 yr guarantee - not bad.

The Accurist you've posted is too hard to read IMO.

You think I'd be better of taking the Pulsar over the sekonda and Accurist brand? Would it be a better quality watch?

I think you're looking for someone to tell you what to do. All the watches you mentioned are generally good quality for the money you're spending.

How about popping in to Argos and asking them to look at the watches? Once you hold a watch and have a feel of it you will immediately find a favourite.

I am looking for general guidance, I popped into Argos just now and the Sekonda as per my first post was very cheap in the hand, the bracelet felt like a tin can. The Pulsar there was much better but didn't fancy the face of it. The accurist I really liked and thought it looked and felt great. The way I'm carrying on you would think I was the one wearing it but I'm not.

Pick a watch you think he'd like. 2yr guarantee is good. Accurist, Pulsar, Lorus, Casio and Sekonda are all decent brands. Citizen are a step up.

Movements in these watches are generally good quality - you won't go too far wrong.

I bought the pulsar just now Im dundrum. Its looks and feels like a regular Seiko. Initially I thought the face looked abit dull but when I removed the plastic piece protecting the glass the face is actually quite bright.

I'll post a pic when I get home. Thanks for all the help :)
