Engine Management light

    Hi,

I have a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI with the DPF removed.

Anyway, driving along today on the motorway I accelerated aggressively to check for sooth/black smoke coming from the exhaust, as my car is due for NCT. I'm normally a very relaxed driver.

There was very little sooth from it, probably because I had gone down to Cork and up again to Dublin the week before. I normally only do urban driving so usually a fair bit of black smoke/sooth comes out.

Anyway, on doing this the engine management light has come on but there is no message on the dashboard.
Also, the car performs normally and is not in limp mode.

If I get an OB2 reader can I just knock the light off, even though there is no related message with it? I'm selling the car after the NCT anyway.

Or any other recommendations for this? Thanks in advance

Well, if you get an OBD reader, why not just read the code to determine what threw the code in the first place?

disconnect the battery, and leave it for half a hour this should reset the light, you will have to reset the clock and make sure you know the radio code (if there is one) as you will have to re.enter it once the battery is reconnected. Just remove the negative lead on the battery.

Thanks for yourself. But that the strange thing, on the inboard computer there is no message so therefore it's unlikely to be a fault code, only the EM light is on in the dashboard with no associated message as should be the case.

Not all errors will throw a message on the dash. Maybe the fault is resolved and this is now a "logged" error? Impossible to know until the code is read.

did it feel like it was misfiring when accelerating ?

or at any point did it stop accelerating for a few seconds but then continue on ?

You wont always get a message when there is an engine managment fault.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I didn't notice loss of power or it misfiring at all. Why, what is thT a sign for?

Anyone think it is linked to the removal of the DPF and it trying to regenerate itself or as it's a UK import thinking that the Eloyls fluid needs to be topped up? As in the ECU is thinking that the DPF is still in place? I cannot comment on the work done for the DPF removal as it was done by previous owner.
I've had Fords before where the EM light comes on but there is an associated message on the onboard computer.

I've yet to disconnect the battery to see if it rids it of the light.

    Is it the 1.6tdci ?

If it is and it is 2005 then most likely it wouldnt have ever come with a dpf.

Not too sure about the 1.8 or 2.0 though.

Could be anything really. Just get it plugged in and checked out !

    Thanks for reply.

It's the Euro4 engine 107bhp so DPFs are fitted to them, plus I had one in the last Focus I had.
Only the 1.6tdci 90bhp didn't have the DPF fitted.

Yes, I'll disconnect battery first then I'll pick up an oB2 reader and I'm sure I can then turn light off.

    Thanks
