i was told recently that as soon as age 16 is reached in ireland anyone can legally drive a tractor towing any kind of machinery on any road.

what is the situation when such a peron, say in their twenties, is mentally handicapped so cannot get a driving licence? ie is driving heavy farm machinery on public roads.

Google is amazing, I know it's kinda new but it really works well I searched for "driving age in ireland" and it gave me a link to this: http://www.ndls.ie/en/Driving-Licence/driving-licence-categories.html

Unlike any poster here that is a link the the NDLS who should really know.

    It's a class W licence

W Work vehicles and land tractor with or without a trailer. 16 years

BTW it's not any road as motorways will be off limits for any of a number of reasons.

    So it's a drivers licence.

If your friend can't get a drivers licence then I assume this is not relevant to them.

"This table explains each of the 15 driving licence categories. Minimum age refers to the age at which you can receive a learner permit for that category."

it is the mental handicap issue that concerns.

    see

so you are saying that to drive a work vehicle they do need a learner permit; that is not what is being practised.

ps appreciate your wit but am working one handed on an ancient computer and sometimes links work not.

In addition Intellectual Disability in itself does not bar anybody from a driving licence and rightly so. Some disabilities require a medical report to accompany the licence application. Full details are available online.

It is my understanding that any application for a learners permit or a drivers licence will if there is doubt require a medical certificate. To drive a MPV of any type on a public road will require the relevant permit of licence, together with insurance, it would be a serious issue in relation to the insurance not to disclose any condition that may impact driving. If in doubt disclose.
