Driving without NCT?

    Folks,

Got my car imported from NI on Monday (she's 8 years old). I only managed to tax & insure it yesterday (apparently you cannot tax it the same day you receive the new reg). Obviously I don't have a tax disc or even a new registration certificate, as they probably haven't even been posted yet. NCT folks told me I have to wait a week (!?) after the new documents arrive in the post before making an NCT test appointment. Indeed, I tried to make an online booking and the NCT website doesn't even recognize my new reg.
So what we're looking at here? 1 week for the documents to arrive, 1 week for waiting around for no reason, and then God knows how many weeks (2-3?) for the NCT test.
The problem is that I have to use the car to commute daily, plus a long trip in NI next week.

Any idea what the law says in this regard? Any leeway considering it's a recent import?

Irish rules apply, i.e. "Ah sure, you'll be grand" until you meet the Gard who will absolutely delight in screwing you for every tiny bit he can.

Say what??? :O OMFG... what's that for, driving without displaying a tax disc or driving without an NCT test? or both?
Funny thing is, during the registration process the NCT lady told me quite nonchalantly I can drive without any worries. Either she doesn't know the law, or she thought it would be a good joke :D

Anyway, it appears my tax disc has been issued and posted, but the logbook still awaits issue.
I managed to get an NCT appointment for 13th of May. That being said, does the 5 points & €1500 fine still apply?

still an offence (and no tax would be on top of that little lot)

Forgot to ask, is the driver or the car owner the offender in this case?
Right before switching over I had the car fully serviced and NCT pre-tested, and I was advised the rear tires need being replaced before the actual NCT test.
The problem is that my rear tires are odd so they didn't have replacements in stock (245/40/17).
Immediately afterwards I got the new reg, and now I'm unable to drive the car (even though I have a test appointment) because there's no provision in the law to allow for this.

It's really a stupid situation: I cannot drive before the test (except on the day), but if I don't get new tires it's a guaranteed fail anyway...

The dealer agreed to have the car picked from my driveway, driven to their garage, have the tires replaced and balanced, and driven back to me.

Would be funny as hell if the cops fined the dealership driver on the occasion :D
