After some discussion on the Chinese Phone Thread, I'm being brave and starting a thread on tablets.

Personally I'm very tempted to get this soon.

If you are going to purchase a Chinese tablet make sure there are custom ROMs available for it first

    What's the need?

Most of them come with all the Chinese bloatware installed which will need you to be able to root it to remove some of the more stubborn apps,

Plus custom roms are nearly always more up to date and will be more optimised for your tablet :)

Oh right. Mixeshop will root free of charge. They did with my phone anyway. :)

So if I order a tablet from mixeshop it will arrive ready to use? I'm about to buy a 10" for my Dad, so if anyone could advise me, especially if they are ready yo use it would be great.

Tbh theres a good Hanspree tablet in power city for 140 would probably suit you.

I emailed mixeshop just to be sure. All tablets can be rooted for free, just need to ask for it in comments box when paying. :)

From personal experience I would recommend one.

Just bought one from DID Mick, for 150 there were none in Power City, thanks alot for the tip. Thargor, my Dad just wants it for generally use, he's 71 so I think it's ideal for him. The specs are quiet good after all and at least with buying it in DID I have some come back if it doesn't work correctly. Thanks again Guys for the advice much appreciated. :D

I think I'll be ordering that Onda in the next few days.

In terms of the Hannspree's I've had to return two since christmas. The first one just stopped working and the second lost the screen rotation with the update. The third one seems to be working so far but I'd strongly recommend disabling updates and just sticking to the version it has out of the box.

Right then. First out of the box impressions are of a solid, well built piece of kit. Metal back casing helps the look a lot. Ordered a HDMI cable and a keyboard case with it. Bit disappointed that the USB connection for the keyboard is the wrong one, need to raise that with mixeshop.

Onda use a custom UI which looks great but is a bit sluggish. Had saw it in a review so it didn't come as a shock, a custom ROM will be researched. Overall the screen quality is pretty good, but the Onda UI icons etc are all a little fuzzy around the edges. Far greater clarity actually in apps. Screen is pretty prone to fingerprints, but wipes clean easily. Despite it having been rooted, there was still a good bit of bloat. Most of it has been uninstalled though, with a few that could only be disabled. Have downloaded a good few apps now and most run well except surprisingly for Chrome. I'm going to mess around with a few browsers though to see which is best. A couple of apps aren't compatible with it, nothing important though except maybe for WhatsApp (which I've read this morning is actually coming soon!). Not needed on my tablet though really.

It arrived with 73% battery and after almost 4 hours of messing around, it's on 20% which I would deem to be more than acceptable. Speakers on it aren't THE best, a little tinny but with decent headphones plugged in I have no complaints about the sound.

One of the most important things IMO is the keyboard, which after typing this out on is excellent. The 4:3 aspect ratio shows up a large keyboard which I like a lot.

Total cost (cos I don't care telling) for tablet, keyboard case, HDMI cable and shipping: €209.46

EDIT: Despite having been told that rooting was free and I did ask for it, tablet wasn't rooted. Explains a lot.

Any sign of custom ROMs for these new tablets? Many use the Allwinner chipset which is more amenable to ROMs than the Mediatek ones in budget phones. There is a chap on the slatedroid forums who has knocked up ROMs for large numbers of these, but he doesn't seem to have worked his magic for recent tablets.

Was looking at slatedroid last night, looks like there's a root and upgrade to KitKat available for the Onda.

I would go here for ROMs rooting, etc

    www.arctablet.com/blog/forum/onda-v972/

    V975 also there.....

V1 hardware, be careful, they also have V3, it will be shown as part of your S/N.

Also, be sure to check you got the right amount of RAM....

I got stung with a 7" Onda, only 512, advertised with 1MB....took a €15 voucher instead of returning, hassle.

This is All winner, so use Phoenix Suite to flash, its very easy, Arctablet have d/l for latest version, it's fun, and almost impossible to brick!!

    Good luck.

The price is not very competitive I think.

Well after a day of mild panic yesterday, all is well. :D

Downloaded a factory update to KitKat and have it installed now. Didn't work at first and was convinced I had soft bricked it. Android with the red warning triangle and all that.

Everything is running so much smoother now. Will try it for a while before making any more ROM/ root decisions.

The ROMs on that arctablet link are just small tweaks to stock ROM. Which is alright if it has what you need, but I'll hold out for Omni or CyanogenMod.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭pajor

Onda has been rooted, which hasn't exactly been useful yet.

Was about to install a custom ROM which uses Nova Launcher, but have just downloaded it from the Play Store instead. Will test it out for a while before I decide whether to install it or not.

The 'Onda Desktop' is real glitchy. Keeps adding more home screens and apps from the dock bar just disappear.

Anyone looking into the Xiaomi Mipad? I think it looks really sweet, even with the Apple *shudder* design :) Released on Tuesday as far as I know

I'm in the market for a 7" or 8" tablet and hoping to tap into some of the experience and knowledge in this thread. Key attributes for this tablet will be:-

    1. HD screen resolution
    2. Micro SD card slot, preferably up to 32GB
    3. Long battery life
    4. Decent processor

GPS and GSM/3G capability isn't important.

Is there something better than this for €120? http://www.focalprice.com/CE0980W/Freelander_PX3_7.85_10_Point_Capacitive_IPS_G_G_Touch_Screen_1024x768_Android.html
