Sugarman, thanks a million for that. something we will seriously consider. We are both with vodafone. is it ok to swap over to another ph comany sim card for short term usage?

Also, manually choose three Italy when over there because if your phone defaults to any network other than three, which it will when on automatic, you will be charged the normal extortionate roaming rates.

I wouldn't trust what a call agent would tell me regarding whether the phone is locked or not. Best way to test is to borrow a 3/O2/Meteor (anything but Vodafone) SIM from a friend and try it, that way you'll know for certain if it's locked or not.

Is three like home still available to new customers? I didn't think it was.

3 like home should be still available: apps (dot) three (dot) ie/roaming/pages/display/three-like-home

Only thing, if you just plan to call each other, and use skype or a similar service to call people in Ireland, you can find a lot cheaper phone deals in Italy. Also, you should be able to have calls, sms and data for less than 20 euros a month: check Tim.it (look for "special" or "young" if you can apply, or "smart"), or vodafone.it "smart 200" or wind.it "all inclusive".
Also three is good, but you might have some little issues with signal coverage in some parts of the country.
