Hi there. Does anyone know how I go about getting a provisional driving licence.

I got one about 14 years ago in the police station, just filled out some forms, gave em some pics, and bish bosh bang, got a licence.

    Has it changed?

I live in Thailand but will be returning home soon, so a driving licence would be handy?

Can I apply online? They have the internet on computers now.

You have to do the theory test first and you can only do that when you get home in one of a number of designated test centres. Next step is to apply for a learner permit, then do a set number of hours of instruction using an approved driving instructor, then do the test (no sooner than 6 months after the learner permit is issued), then get a full licence.

The learner process is much more formal.
Also, there are stricter laws on learners. The old loophole where you could drive alone on your 2nd provisional is long gone. You can't ever drive in a public place without being accompanied by (and under the supervision of) a full licence holder who is qualified for at least 2 years. Learners who accumulate 6 penalty points will be banned (half the limit for full licence holders), and there are lower blood alcohol limits for learners.

Are you sure you were in Ireland?

Ah, them were the days! That's all you had to do really.

You could never get any kind of a driving licence in a Garda station, the OP is probably talking about Nutgrove or Chancery St.

I seem to remember having to go to a garda station to get the application form stamped when i first applied for a provision licence 27 odd years ago but they were never issued there.

No, I think you had to send off the form signed by the gardai, and out arrives your license in the post!
No theory test, no having to take any amount of lessons, no having to be accompanied by a licensed driver, nada. Just fill out the form, get your pics, pop into the cops and bobs yer uncle!
